Phylogenomic analysis clarifies the evolutionary origin of Coffea arabica

Yves Bawin et al.

Summary: The evolutionary origin of the allotetraploid species Coffea arabica, cultivated for Arabica coffee production, was inferred through genetic distances and a time-calibrated phylogenetic tree, confirming Coffea canephora and C. eugenioides as the putative progenitor species. The hybridization event between these species likely occurred between 1.08 million and 543,000 years ago, coinciding with environmental upheaval that could have facilitated the emergence of C. arabica.

Pattern-recognition receptors are required for NLR-mediated plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: The plant immune system consists of pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), which are activated by different mechanisms and involve distinct signaling cascades. PTI is triggered by microbial patterns via cell surface receptors, while ETI is activated by pathogen effector proteins via intracellular receptors.

The Tomato Interspecific NB-LRR Gene Arsenal and Its Impact on Breeding Strategies

Giuseppe Andolfo et al.

Summary: Tomato serves as a model system for studying plant resistance mechanisms, particularly in the context of evolutionary dynamics and the diversity of nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) receptors. Research has shown that adaptive diversification in key resistance genes in tomato is influenced by species-specific pathogen pressure, emphasizing the potential for exploiting genetic diversity in breeding programs to introduce new resistance traits. The discovery of new mechanisms involved in the generation of resistant genes is considered crucial for future breeding strategies.

Genome-Wide Characterization of Lectin Receptor Kinases in Saccharum spontaneum L. and Their Responses to Stagonospora tainanensis Infection

Zhoutao Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified a total of 429 allelic and non-allelic LecRKs based on the genome of Saccharum spontaneum, and classified them into three evolved independent types. It was found that LecRKs showed an unequal distribution on chromosomes, and that more G-type tandem repeats may come from gene expansion.

High-quality chromosome-level genomes of Cucumis metuliferus and Cucumis melo provide insight into Cucumis genome evolution

Jian Ling et al.

Summary: The African horned cucumber displays high-level resistance to important plant pathogens and has a genome with a large number of resistance-related genes. Its genome shows significant structural variations compared to other species in the Cucurbitaceae family. Originating in Zimbabwe, the cucumber likely underwent similar domestic selection as melon in other southern African regions. These findings will accelerate research on resistance-related gene evolution and improve efforts in cucurbit crop enhancement.

The Capsicum baccatum-Specific Truncated NLR Protein CbCN Enhances the Innate Immunity against Colletotrichum acutatum

Seungmin Son et al.

Summary: This study identified a specific gene CbCN in Capsicum baccatum, which enhances innate immunity against anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum acutatum by regulating defense response genes. Transgenic plants overexpressing CbCN showed increased resistance to C. acutatum and upregulation of pathogenesis-related genes. Silencing of CbCN in chili peppers resulted in reduced anthracnose resistance and expression of PR genes after C. acutatum inoculations.

De novo assembly, annotation, and comparative analysis of 26 diverse maize genomes

Matthew B. Hufford et al.

Summary: The study reports de novo genome assemblies, transcriptomes, annotations, and methylomes for 26 maize inbreds, with over 103,000 pangenes identified. It shows that the ancient tetraploid character of maize continues to degrade by fractionation, and reveals variation in DNA methylation levels across genotypes.

Plant NLR diversity: the known unknowns of pan-NLRomes

A. Cristina Barragan et al.

Summary: Plants and pathogens constantly adapt to each other, leading to a high level of diversity among NLRs in the plant immune system. With comprehensive pan-genome and pan-NLRome studies, our understanding of NLR sequence diversity is rapidly growing, providing a powerful platform for assigning NLR function.
