Heterophylly Quantitative Trait Loci Respond to Salt Stress in the Desert Tree Populus euphratica

Yaru Fu et al.

Summary: Heterophylly, or leaf morphological changes along plant shoot axes, is an important indicator of plant eco-adaptation to heterogeneous microenvironments. Despite extensive studies on the genetic control of leaf shape, the genetic architecture of heterophylly remains elusive. By conducting a leaf shape mapping experiment and functional mapping-assisted genome-wide association study, significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for heterophylly and related candidate genes were identified, with functions related to stress resistance, auxin, shape, and disease resistance. The findings suggest a potential link between heterophylly and saline tolerance in P. euphratica, providing new avenues for research on saline resistance-related genetic mechanisms.

AUXIN RESPONSE FACTORS 6 and 17 control the flag leaf angle in rice by regulating secondary cell wall biosynthesis of lamina joints

Guoqiang Huang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the regulatory mechanism of two auxin response factors, OsARF6 and OsARF17, in controlling flag leaf angle in rice. They activate the expression of the ILA1 gene to determine leaf angle, providing new breeding targets for this key trait in rice and potentially other cereals.

Progress in studying heteromorphic leaves in Populus euphratica: leaf morphology, anatomical structure, development regulation and their ecological adaptation to arid environments

Zhihan Song et al.

Summary: Populus euphratica Oliv. is a tree species known for its strong resistance to drought and salt stress, primarily found in arid and semiarid regions. Its heteromorphic leaves exhibit distinct anatomical and physiological features that contribute to its adaptation to dry environments, making it valuable for ecological research on arid areas and understanding plant heteromorphic leaf development mechanisms.
