Maximising the benefits of trees on farms in Tasmania - a desktop review of investment opportunities to improve farm enterprise productivity, profitability and sustainability

D. Monckton et al.

Summary: Demand for forest products in Australia exceeds domestic capacity, resulting in a trade deficit of around AUD 2 billion per year. The need for forest plantations is increasing, especially in Tasmania, where there has been a recent decline in the plantation estate due to competition from agricultural land use. Establishing trees on farms is a prospective area for expansion to meet the growing demand for sustainable forest products.

The impact of climate change on food and human security in Nigeria

Kelechi Johnmary Ani et al.

Summary: This study aims to uncover the changing impact of climate change on the food and human security sector in Nigeria. Through in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, it was found that climate change has negatively affected food security and led to ongoing armed conflicts over natural resources in the country. The originality and value of this study lies in its thorough examination of the impact of climate change on Nigeria's national security.

Effect of salt stress on the photosynthetic characteristics and endogenous hormones, and: A comprehensive evaluation of salt tolerance in Reaumuria soongorica seedlings

Shipeng Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological response mechanisms and salt tolerance of Reaumuria soongarica under salt stress. The results showed that treatment with 200 mM NaCl for 3 days significantly increased antioxidant enzyme activity, osmotic adjustment substance content, and chlorophyll content in R. soongorica seedlings, but decreased malondialdehyde content. R. soongorica seedlings exposed to 400 and 500 mM NaCl solutions had lower leaf water content, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, water use efficiency, and endogenous hormone content. Principal component analysis revealed that endogenous hormone content and antioxidant enzyme activity were useful for evaluating salt tolerance in R. soongorica seedlings.

Impacts of land use, population, and climate change on global food security

Amy Molotoks et al.

Summary: Research indicates that future global food security will be significantly impacted by factors such as climate change, population growth, and changes in land use. Population growth appears to be the primary driver of changes in undernourishment prevalence, highlighting the importance of strategies to mitigate the consequences of projected population growth. Ensuring severe future food insecurity is avoided will require actions such as improving maternal health care, increasing equality of access to food at the national level, closing the yield gap, and changes in trade patterns.
