Genome Size Variation in Dianthus sylvestris Wulfen sensu lato (Caryophyllaceae)

Ana Terlevic et al.

Summary: The study on genome size variation in Dianthus sylvestris populations from the Balkan Peninsula and the European Alps revealed significant differences between diploid and tetraploid populations, with tetraploids showing genome downsizing and distinct morphological and environmental characteristics compared to diploids. There is geographical and partial taxonomical correlation in relative genome size within diploid populations, with higher RGS in the southern Balkan Peninsula and the Alps. Greater RGS variation was observed among Balkan populations compared to the Alps, indicating more pronounced evolutionary differentiation in the Balkan Peninsula, while deep RGS divergence in the Alps suggests persistence of alpine populations in different Pleistocene refugia.

Estimating repeat spectra and genome length from low-coverage genome skims with RESPECT

Shahab Sarmashghi et al.

Summary: The cost of genome sequencing is dropping faster than genome assembly and completion. The use of lightly sampled genomes and k-mers has advantages in identifying and phylogenetically placing eukaryotic species. A novel constrained optimization method can provide reliable estimates of genome length and repeat content.

Power and Weakness of Repetition - Evaluating the Phylogenetic Signal From Repeatomes in the Family Rosaceae With Two Case Studies From Genera Prone to Polyploidy and Hybridization (Rosa and Fragaria)

Veit Herklotz et al.

Summary: Plant genomes contain non-coding repetitive DNA, with phylogenetic signals obtained from repeatome data. The study showed that repeatome data can support subfamilial classification within Rosaceae, distinguishing major evolutionary lineages in Fragaria and showing weak phylogenetic signals but geographic patterns in Rosa. Success of the method varies between taxonomic groups.

The nature of intraspecific and interspecific genome size variation in taxonomically complex eyebrights

Hannes Becher et al.

Summary: The study investigated genome size variation within and between species of British eyebrights and found significant intraspecific genome size variation. It demonstrated the utility of treating genome size as the outcome of polygenic variation, which may be influenced by ongoing hybridization and population subdivision.

A computational toolset for rapid identification of SARS-CoV-2, other viruses and microorganisms from sequencing data

Shifu Chen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a toolset and resources for rapid identification of viruses and microorganisms from sequencing data. Fastv is a lightweight tool that can detect microbial sequences, identify target microorganisms, and visualize coverage of microbial genomes. Experimental results show that fastv has achieved 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity in detecting SARS-CoV-2.
