Trade-off between carbon sequestration and water loss for vegetation greening in China

Xin Lan et al.

Summary: The land use management of forests and croplands greatly influences vegetation greening in China, impacting carbon sequestration and water loss from evapotranspiration at the terrestrial ecosystem. While the significant role of vegetation greening in terrestrial carbon sequestration is well-known, the effects of water loss caused by vegetation greening on ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) are often overlooked. The study finds that the actual vegetation greening scenario leads to higher evapotranspiration compared to the scenario without vegetation greening, but the physiological effects of vegetation (elevated CO2 concentration and decreased VPD) result in a decline in evapotranspiration for both scenarios over the years.

Divergent responses of ecosystem water-use efficiency to extreme seasonal droughts in Southwest China

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the ecosystem water-use efficiency (WUE) in karst and non-karst areas of Southwest China in response to seasonal droughts. The research found that the karst area had lower WUE compared to the non-karst area, with more severe impacts of drought, especially during summer and spring droughts. The study also highlighted the importance of understanding the coupling relationship between global carbon and water cycles in the face of increasing drought frequency and severity due to future climate change.

Strong impacts of autumn phenology on grassland ecosystem water use efficiency on the Tibetan Plateau

Min Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that the delayed end of growing season (EOS) increased daily mean GPP but also increased ET in autumn, without enhancing WUE. The delay in EOS had a significant impact on daily GPP and ET in the steppe ecosystem across the Tibetan Plateau.
