Contribution of fruit microbiome to raspberry volatile organic compounds emission

Daniela Sangiorgio et al.

Summary: This study found that fruit-associated microbiota play a significant role in determining fruit volatile emissions, with bacteria contributing to the construction of fruit aroma. Sterile treatment significantly decreased the levels of various aroma compounds in fruit, and reintroducing bacteria could only partially restore their emission. The study also identified significant correlations between specific bacterial taxa and volatile emissions, suggesting that controlling microbial colonization could enhance fruit aroma in the future.

Defeating Huanglongbing Pathogen Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus With Indigenous Citrus Endophyte Bacillus subtilis L1-21

Shahzad Munir et al.

Summary: Huanglongbing (HLB) is a devastating botanical pandemic of citrus crops caused by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), for which there is no cure currently available. However, a research study has found that introducing an indigenous endophyte Bacillus subtilis L1-21 isolated from healthy citrus can help manage the disease. The study showed that application of B. subtilis L1-21 resulted in a significant reduction in CLas copies in infected citrus trees and orchards over a period of 2 years.

Temporal metabolite responsiveness of microbiota in the tea plant phyllosphere promotes continuous suppression of fungal pathogens

Ping Xu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to decipher the microbiome assembly in the tea plant phyllosphere throughout shoot development and elucidate the potential impact of host metabolites on this process. The findings suggest that a functional phyllosphere microbiota assembled along with development-specific metabolites in tea plants, continuously suppressing prevalent fungal pathogens.

Detection of Volatiles by HS-SPME-GC/MS and Biological Effect Evaluation of Buddha's Hand Fruit

Summary: The present study chemically characterized the volatile composition of Citrus medica var. sarcodactylus fruit and evaluated the antiradical power, antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity of its essential oil, hydrolate, and methanol extracts. The results showed that limonene and gamma-terpinene were the most abundant compounds in the fruit, and the essential oil exhibited good antiradical and antibacterial activities. The hydrolate did not show antibacterial activity, while the methanol extracts from both the exocarp and mesocarp had high efficacy against the tested bacteria. The extracts also showed cytotoxicity against leukemia cells.

Reprogramming of phytopathogen transcriptome by a non-bactericidal pesticide residue alleviates its virulence in rice

Haruna Matsumoto et al.

Summary: Bacteria equipped with virulence systems based on highly bioactive small molecules can evade host defense mechanisms. In this study, variations in the virulence of Burkholderia plantarii, a highly destructive pathogen threatening rice production, were observed in different rice-producing regions. The variation in virulence was not due to known host-related or external factors, but rather linked to the accumulation of the non-bactericidal organic compound 5-Amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol (ATT). ATT reduced virulence factor secretion and inhibited pathogen virulence by interfering with an upstream signaling cascade. Mechanistic insights revealed that the histidine protein kinase TroK is likely the molecular target antagonized by ATT. This study provides novel insights into virulence modulation in a plant-pathogen system that relies on host metabolic activity and subsequent signaling interference.

Bacterial seed endophyte shapes disease resistance in rice

Haruna Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the endophyte bacterium Sphingomonas melonis can provide disease resistance to rice by producing anthranilic acid, inhibiting the virulence factor synthesis of the seed-borne pathogen Burkholderia plantarii. This finding offers new insights to combat globally widespread bacterial diseases threatening modern crop cultivation.
