Phylogenetic conservatism explains why plants are more likely to produce fleshy fruits in the tropics

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study using a dataset from Southwest China, it was found that plant fruit type is primarily influenced by phylogenetic conservatism, with growth form and climate region explaining a lower variance in fruit type. The even distribution of phylogenetic conservatism along the phylogeny suggests that fruit type reflects both ancient and recent phylogenetic relationships.
