Antioxidant gene expression analysis and evaluation of total phenol content and oxygen-scavenging system in tea accessions under normal and drought stress conditions

Mehdi Rahimi et al.

Summary: The results of this study highlighted the importance of antioxidant enzymes in tea accessions under drought stress conditions, with 100 and 399 accessions showing the highest antioxidant enzyme values. Different tea accessions demonstrated varying levels of antioxidant activity and IC50 values, with 100 and 399 accessions being identified as stress-tolerant and 278 and 276 accessions as sensitive under drought stress conditions. Total phenol content, antioxidant activity, and the oxygen-scavenging system were found to be useful descriptors for identifying drought-tolerant tea accessions.

Sequenced application of glutathione as an antioxidant with an organic biostimulant improves physiological and metabolic adaptation to salinity in wheat

Hafeez ur Rehman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of glutathione and moringa leaf extract in improving wheat growth and metabolic adaptation under saline conditions. The results showed that sequenced application of MLE and GSH enhanced wheat's osmotic stress tolerance, stabilized membrane integrity, and improved photosynthetic efficiency, ultimately leading to increased grain yield. Exogenously applied MLE and/or GSH can be the best physiological strategy to mitigate the deleterious effects of salinity and improve physiological and metabolic adaptation in wheat under saline field conditions.

Transcriptional Regulation of Drought Response in Arabidopsis and Woody Plants

Tao Yao et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of recent progress in understanding drought response mechanisms in plants, focusing on the role of transcription factor families. It highlights the importance of studying these mechanisms in model plants like Arabidopsis and economically and ecologically significant woody species like Populus. The review also mentions the potential for further insights into drought responses in woody plants through high-throughput omics analyses and advanced genome editing techniques.

Candidate reference genes for quantitative gene expression analysis in Lagerstroemia indica

Manli Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the stability of nine candidate reference genes in six experimental data sets in Lagerstroemia indica, and found that using a combination of two stably expressed reference genes improved the accuracy of qPCR. LiEF1 alpha-2 showed high expression stability across all experimental sets, suggesting it may be a reliable reference gene for gene expression studies in L. indica.

Photosynthetic resistance and resilience under drought, flooding and rewatering in maize plants

Miao Qi et al.

Summary: Abnormally altered precipitation patterns induced by climate change have profound global effects on crop production. Plant functional responses to various precipitation regimes were investigated and it was found that drought and flooding can hinder photosynthetic capacity. However, photosynthetic traits can recover after rewatering, with possible regulative trade-offs in response to episodic drought and subsequent rewatering, enhancing drought resistance and resilience in plants.

Characterizing the Leaf Transcriptome of Chrysanthemum rhombifolium (Ling et C. Shih), a Drought Resistant, Endemic Plant From China

Wenjie Zhang et al.

Summary: The transcriptome sequencing of Chrysanthemum rhombifolium revealed a large number of genes involved in stress resistance mechanisms, with specific genes identified for defense and stress tolerance. This analysis also highlighted the presence of highly polymorphic microsatellites in the species, along with the reliability of the transcriptomic data confirmed by phylogenetic analysis of related species. This study provides valuable genetic information for understanding the molecular biology and stress adaptation mechanisms in C. rhombifolium, with potential for future molecular improvements in chrysanthemums.

Comparative analysis of abscisic acid recovery on two varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under drought condition

M. Ramachandran et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of exogenously applied ABA on two rice varieties under drought stress conditions, finding that the 100 uM concentration positively enhanced morphological characteristics and biochemical parameters of ADT-49 compared to ADT-45. Both varieties showed decreased growth characteristics under drought stress, but the specific concentration of 100 uM ABA improved morphology, chlorophyll pigments, and biochemical contents, enhancing the plant's ROS defense system and yield characteristics. The results indicate that the relatively reliable ADT-49 variety was more drought-tolerant than ADT-45.

Challenges to design-oriented breeding of root system architecture adapted to climate change

Yusaku Uga

Summary: Roots are crucial for plants to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, with root system architecture determining the extent of resource gathering. As global climate change intensifies, improving root structures to combat abiotic stresses is essential. Traditional breeding methods face limitations in selecting promising root system architectures, hence the need for new strategies.

Candidate regulators and target genes of drought stress in needles and roots of Norway spruce

Julia C. Haas et al.

Summary: Drought stress has significant impacts on seedling establishment, survival, and productivity of plants, particularly coniferous tree species. Norway spruce seedlings show reversible physiological plasticity in response to drought, with changes in shoot water potential and ABA levels. Root and needle transcriptional responses to drought differ, with roots showing more down-regulation of growth-related genes. Comparison with previously studied drought-response genes in Arabidopsis thaliana shows both conservation and divergence in transcriptional response in P. abies, highlighting the importance of profiling both above- and belowground tissues to understand drought response mechanisms in coniferous species.
