Diversity of microbial communities and genes involved in nitrous oxide emissions in Antarctic soils impacted by marine animals as revealed by metagenomics and 100 metagenome-assembled genomes

Lia Ramirez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Antarctic soils impacted by marine animals show extensive novel microbial diversity, with Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes being the most abundant phyla. Soils influenced by birds have a higher relative abundance of denitrification genes compared to soils without animal presence. This study enhances our understanding of microbial populations in ice-free coastal Antarctic soils and their role in nitrous oxide emissions.
