The distribution of cultivable oral anaerobic microbiota identified by MALDI-TOF MS in healthy subjects and in patients with periodontal disease

Yu-Shan Wei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify cultivatable anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity using MALDI-TOF Biotyper. The findings revealed higher abundance of certain bacteria in periodontal patients compared to healthy controls, and showed associations between bacterial distribution changes and periodontal disease progression, aging, and basic treatment.

Effusive-constrictive pericarditis secondary to pneumopericardium associated with gastropericardial fistula

Yoshiyasu Ono et al.

Summary: A 66-year-old man with a history of gastric pull-up reconstruction for esophageal cancer was hospitalized due to prolonged chest pain. Computed tomography revealed ulceration and abscess in the gastric conduit adjacent to the heart, suggesting gastropericardial fistula. Despite conservative treatment with antibiotics for pneumopericardium, the patient developed effusive-constrictive pericarditis and required pericardiectomy and epicardiectomy for effective reduction of central venous pressure. Analysis of resected tissue identified Streptococcus anginosus and Candida tropicalis.
