Type I Interferon Induction and Exhaustion during Viral Infection: Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells and Emerging COVID-19 Findings

Trever T. Greene et al.

Summary: Type I interferons (IFN-I) are potent antiviral cytokines that can drive immunopathology if overproduced, with plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) being specialized producers of IFN-I. After viral infection, pDCs may undergo exhaustion, producing less IFN-I to prevent excessive immune responses and immunopathology.
