Changes in health-related outcomes among colorectal cancer patients undergoing inpatient rehabilitation therapy: a systematic review of observational and interventional studies

Sophie Scherer et al.

Summary: This review summarized and evaluated changes in health-related outcomes and the effectiveness of inpatient rehabilitation therapy among colorectal cancer patients. The findings suggest improvements in physical health and functional independence during inpatient rehabilitation, but these improvements wane over time. Further large-scale studies, particularly randomized controlled trials with long-term follow-up, are essential to assess the effectiveness of inpatient rehabilitation.

Effect of primary colorectal cancer tumor location on survival after pulmonary metastasectomy

Erin M. Corsini et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer location may affect survival after pulmonary metastasectomy, with patients with left-sided tumors experiencing a survival benefit. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings and assess the impact of tumor location on prognosis in patients eligible for pulmonary metastasectomy.

Patients with colorectal cancer and brain metastasis: The relevance of extracranial metastatic patterns predicting time intervals to first occurrence of intracranial metastasis and survival

Johannes Thurmaier et al.

Summary: The study revealed that extracranial metastatic patterns can predict survival in patients with colorectal cancer and brain metastasis. Specifically, patients with concurrent liver and lung metastasis had the shortest survival times, while patients with lung metastasis showed longer overall survival compared to those with liver metastasis or without lung metastasis.

Gene Therapy Targeting p53 and KRAS for Colorectal Cancer Treatment: A Myth or the Way Forward?

Hidayati Husainy Hasbullah et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy globally, with most cases still being diagnosed at advanced stages despite efforts to raise awareness and advancements in treatment. Gene therapy targeting defect genes like TP53 and KRAS shows potential as an alternative treatment avenue for CRC, but faces limitations such as lack of related technology, high cost, and ethical issues.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Microsatellite Instability and KRAS Mutation in Stage IV Colorectal Cancer: Prevalence, Geographic Discrepancies, and Outcomes From the National Cancer Database

Johannes Uhlig et al.

Summary: This study found distinct mutational behavior in stage IV colorectal cancer based on microsatellite and KRAS status, with KRAS mutation, MSI-H, and primary CRC sidedness independently affecting overall survival and interacting with different prognostic profiles. Generically classifying adenocarcinomas at different sites as CRC may underestimate this diversity.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of CGA on physical performance in older frail patients undergoing surgery for CRC. The ongoing trial will provide valuable knowledge on whether preoperative CGA and postoperative geriatric follow-up and intervention including an exercise program can counteract physical decline and improve quality of life in frail CRC patients undergoing surgery.

The Spectrum, Tendency and Predictive Value of PIK3CA Mutation in Chinese Colorectal Cancer Patients

Xinhui Fu et al.

Summary: In Chinese CRC patients, the mutation rate of PIK3CA was 13.4%, with an increasing trend from 2014 to 2018. PIK3CA exon 20 mutated patients at stage IV had shorter overall survival, while PIK3CA mutated patients at stage III were more likely to relapse. Cetuximab treatment did not show significant differences in progression-free survival between PIK3CA exon 9 wild-type and mutant patients in KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF wild-type mCRC patients.

Summary: The proportion of young patients with colorectal cancer in their 40s is increasing globally. Patients in their 40s tend to have more metastatic lesions but show similar oncologic outcomes compared to patients in their 30s and 50s, indicating that age alone does not significantly impact the survival rates of CRC patients at stages 1-3.
