A multianalytical investigation of the physicochemical properties of white rock art pigments at the Nali and Tene Koro sites, Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Moh. Mualliful Ilmi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physicochemical properties of white pigments used at the Nali and Tene Koro rock art sites in Indonesia. Analytical methods including XRF, microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were used. The results reveal that the white pigment at the Nali site is predominantly composed of gypsum, while the white pigment at the Tene Koro site consists mainly of calcite.

The effects of climate change on the Pleistocene rock art of Sulawesi

J. Huntley et al.

Summary: This study presents evidence of haloclasty on Pleistocene-aged rock art panels in the Maros-Pangkep limestone karsts of southern Sulawesi, showing how climate-catalysed salt efflorescence has accelerated the deterioration of these artworks in recent decades. The increasing frequency and severity of El Nirio-induced droughts from anthropogenic climate change, combined with seasonal moisture injected via monsoonal rains, are creating ideal conditions for evaporation and haloclasty, further damaging the rock art in the region.

A review of radiometric dating and pigment characterizations of rock art in Indonesia

Moh. Mualliful Ilmi et al.

Summary: Physicochemical-based analyses have been widely utilized to study rock art in Indonesia, but research in this area is still in the early stages. Despite the diversity and large number of rock art sites in Indonesia, only a few reports have described the physicochemical properties and radiometric data of rock art. Further studies and comprehensive research are needed to improve our understanding of rock art in Indonesia.
