Polar lipidomic profile shows Chlorococcum amblystomatis as a promising source of value-added lipids

Tiago A. Conde et al.

Summary: The lipidome of Chlorococcum amblystomatis was identified for the first time using HILIC-HR-ESI-MS/MS, revealing high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and bioactive properties. The lipid extract showed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, with low atherogenic and thrombogenic indices, making it a valuable source for various industries.

Chemoplasticity of the polar lipid profile of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris grown under heterotrophic and autotrophic conditions

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study characterized the polar lipidome of Chlorella vulgaris grown under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, revealing differences in lipid species and abundance distribution. Heterotrophic cultures had a higher abundance of low unsaturated species, while autotrophic cultures were rich in highly unsaturated glycolipids and lyso species. The fatty acids profile showed a high content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in autotrophic cultures and omega-6 fatty acids in heterotrophic cultures. The two lipid extracts exhibited high antioxidant activity and inhibitory capacity for cyclooxygenase-2, providing evidence of polar lipid plasticity in microalgae for biotechnology applications.

Microalgae as Sustainable Bio-Factories of Healthy Lipids: Evaluating Fatty Acid Content and Antioxidant Activity

Tiago A. Conde et al.

Summary: The study used gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry to characterize the fatty acid profiles of seven different commercial microalgae, revealing unique compositions among them, especially in terms of omega-3 fatty acids, with species of the same phylum showing similar trends. Additionally, the research found that different lipid extracts exhibited comparable antioxidant activities, further demonstrating the potential of microalgae as sustainable and healthy sources of essential lipids.

Targeted and untargeted lipidomic analysis of haptophyte cultures reveals novel and divergent nutrient-stress adaptations

Daniel P. Lowenstein et al.

Summary: The study explored the lipidomes of various species within the haptophytes clade, revealing evolutionary and ecological variations in lipid compositions and potential biomarkers. In addition, the lipidomic responses of four haptophyte species to nitrogen and phosphorus limitation were investigated, showing unique lipidomic changes in response to nutrient stresses. These findings highlight divergent evolutionary strategies and challenge common phenotypic extrapolations between species.
