Extended Bound States in the Continuum with Symmetry-Broken Terahertz Dielectric Metasurfaces

Song Han et al.

Summary: The study investigates traditional symmetry-protected and accidental BIC states in a fourfold rotationally symmetric array of silicon resonators in a square lattice. Upon symmetry-breaking, BICs transform into quasi-states with decaying quality factors that follow the inverse-square law as a function of the structural asymmetry parameter. Multiple new states of extended BICs are observed beyond typical inverse-square law behavior at larger asymmetries.

Ultra-high-Q resonances in plasmonic metasurfaces

M. Saad Bin-Alam et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanostructures show great potential in ultra-thin sub-wavelength devices, but are often limited by resistive losses. By utilizing surface lattice resonances (SLRs), researchers have achieved a high quality-factor metasurface in the telecommunication band, offering exciting possibilities for manipulating incident light fields and creating flexible wavelength-scale devices.

All-Dielectric Crescent Metasurface Sensor Driven by Bound States in the Continuum

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: Metasurfaces based on silicon crescent meta-atoms exhibit high sensitivity and potential for real-time and in situ biosensing for a wide range of diagnostic applications due to their high quality factor resonances and near-field enhancements. The higher-order resonance of the metasurface shows twice the sensitivity of the fundamental one for bulk refractive index sensing, making it ideal for compact sensing devices in microfluidic integration.

Active Control of Nanodielectric-Induced THz Quasi-BIC in Flexible Metasurfaces: A Platform for Modulation and Sensing

Thomas CaiWei Tan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the creation of a dynamically controllable quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) with ultrahigh quality factor by embedding nanometric dielectric or semiconductor layers on a symmetric metallic metasurface at terahertz frequencies. The photoexcitation of nanostrips of germanium enables ultrafast switching of a QBIC resonance with significant transmission intensity modulation, presenting opportunities for active micro-nanophotonic devices. An optimization model is provided for (switchable) QBIC resonances in metamaterial arrays, which can serve as an enabling platform for active micro-nanophotonic devices.

Ultralow-threshold laser using super-bound states in the continuum

Min-Soo Hwang et al.

Summary: By merging symmetry-protected and accidental bound states in the continuum, an efficient laser with significantly reduced threshold, substantially increased quality factor, and shrunken far-field images can be realized. The study provides a route for nanolasers with reduced out-of-plane losses in finite-size active nanodevices and improved lasing characteristics.

Summary: The single-wavelength imaging biosensors introduced in this study achieve superior sensitivity for real-time detection of breast cancer extracellular vesicles, paving the way for miniaturized devices for point-of-care diagnostics. The method is based on reconstructing spectral shift information induced by biomarkers dynamically using diatomic dielectric metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum.

Summary: This study successfully observed symmetry-protected plasmonic BICs in a one-dimensional all-metallic grating within the visible range, demonstrating topological band inversion and engineering off-Gamma-point BICs. Experimental results confirmed a Q factor exceeding 60, with simulation showing potential for over 200 with more grooves. The findings open up promising applications in lasers, sensors, light-matter interactions, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics.
