Machine learning as a tool to engineer microstructures: Morphological prediction of tannin-based colloids using Bayesian surrogate models

Soo-Ah Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, machine learning was used to design particles of oxidized tannic acid (OTA) and correlate their size and shape with colloidal suspension conditions. The results showed that a small number of experiments were sufficient to build predictive models of OTA morphology, and multiple property landscapes were generated to infer solutions that met multiple design objectives.

Benchmarking the performance of Bayesian optimization across multiple experimental materials science domains

Qiaohao Liang et al.

Summary: Bayesian optimization (BO) has shown effectiveness in guiding autonomous and high-throughput experiments in materials science. This study evaluated the efficiency of BO across five different experimental materials systems, finding that Gaussian Process (GP) with anisotropic kernels and Random Forest (RF) performed well in BO, outperforming commonly used GP with isotropic kernels. GP with anisotropic kernels demonstrated robustness, while RF is a close alternative with advantages such as lack of distribution assumptions, lower time complexity, and easier initial hyperparameter selection. The benefits of using GP with anisotropic kernels in future materials optimization campaigns were also highlighted.

A data fusion approach to optimize compositional stability of halide perovskites

Shijing Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents a physics-constrained learning framework to identify the most stable alloyed organic-inorganic perovskites. By sampling just 1.8% of the compositional space, compounds with excellent stability and performance were found. Using this approach, enhanced solar cell stability without compromising conversion efficiency was achieved.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
