Assessment of groundwater vulnerability using analytical hierarchy process and evidential belief function with DRASTIC parameters, Cuddalore, India

T. Saranya et al.

Summary: Groundwater, as a reliable source of fresh water throughout the year, is facing threats to its quality and quantity due to climate changes and human activities. It is necessary to identify vulnerable areas to protect the available resources. This study applied two groundwater vulnerability mapping methods, AHP-DRASTIC and EBF-DRASTIC, to the Cuddalore District in India, using modified DRASTIC method and remote sensing and GIS techniques. The models were validated using ROC and the EBF-DRASTIC model was found to be the most suitable for the study region.

Arsenic polluted waters: Application of geochemical modelling as a tool to understand the release and fate of the pollutant in crystalline aquifers

I Fuoco et al.

Summary: This research addresses arsenic pollution by studying water-rock interactions and using reaction path modeling to understand the release of arsenic from rock to water. The modeling accurately reproduces the geochemical processes in crystalline aquifers and provides valuable data to improve understanding of arsenic behavior in similar geological settings worldwide.

A multivariate non-parametric approach for estimating probability of exceeding the local natural background level of arsenic in the aquifers of Calabria region (Southern Italy)

C. Apollaro et al.

Summary: The concept of natural background level (NBL) aims at distinguishing natural and anthropogenic contributions to groundwater contaminant concentrations, and an integrated probabilistic approach combining aquifer-based preselection criteria and multivariate non-parametric geostatistics has been proposed to assess NBL, providing contamination risk management tools.

Predicting the Distribution of Arsenic in Groundwater by a Geospatial Machine Learning Technique in the Two Most Affected Districts of Assam, India: The Public Health Implications

Bibhash Nath et al.

Summary: In this study, a habitation-level predictive model was developed to identify the extent of arsenic risk in the two most affected districts of Assam, India. The relationships between intrinsic and extrinsic predictor variables and arsenic concentration in groundwater were used to predict the probabilities of high arsenic levels. Potential arsenic hotspots were identified, and a large area was found to be potentially unsafe for tube well installations. The hazard probability map generated in this study could be used by policymakers to target well-testing campaigns and provide safe water access to rural households.

Use of reaction path modelling to investigate the evolution of water chemistry in shallow to deep crystalline aquifers with a special focus on fluoride

I Fuoco et al.

Summary: This paper reconstructs the water-rock interaction process in crystalline aquifers using reaction path modeling, with a focus on fluoride behavior. The obtained results show that the theoretical evolution trends reproduce both shallow and deep water samples, providing detailed information on the behavior of relevant constituents.

Geogenic arsenic in groundwater: Challenges, gaps, and future directions

Maria Teresa Alarcon-Herrera et al.

Summary: Research has shown that a large number of people globally are exposed to As through non-potable water and food. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of the conditions that lead to the release of As from natural sources and its subsequent transfer through the food chain. Further research is needed to address the apportionment of As from various sources, the contribution of co-occurring elements to toxicity, as well as the implementation of effective policies to reduce human exposure to As.
