Large Eddy Simulation of a sediment particle under entrainment conditions

Sencer Yucesan et al.

Summary: A Large Eddy Simulation was conducted to study coherent structures in a fully developed turbulent open-channel flow. The forces acting on a stationary sediment particle were computed to predict the particle motion using the impulse concept. The results showed outward and sweep events in high impulse quadrant analyses. The correlation between hydrodynamic forces and the flow field was analyzed. It was found that large, long-lived hairpin-like vortices with bed-normal lengths larger than approximately 100 viscous units increased both lift and drag forces, facilitating the initiation of particle motion.

Mohammad Amir Khan et al.

Summary: A laboratory study was conducted on the turbulent flow structures around a mid-channel bar, using a model to unravel the fluvial fluxes triggered by the bar's 3D turbulent burst phenomenon. It was found that the transverse component of turbulent kinetic energy cannot be neglected due to the three-dimensionality of the flow. The octant events approach was used to analyze the flow in the vicinity of the bar, and functional relationships were developed between the stable movements observed in the study.

Fluid-particle interaction regimes during the evolution of turbidity currents from a coupled LES/DEM model

Jiafeng Xie et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fluid-particle interactions in lock-exchange turbidity currents over a flat bed using a model combining LES and DEM. The model's reliability is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solutions with measurements. It is found that the vorticity field plays a crucial role in the evolution of the currents, affecting the fluid lift force on particles. Interestingly, only a small fraction of the initial particle gravitational potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy of the currents.

Summary: Direct numerical simulations were performed to analyze the reverse transition dynamics of a turbulent spiral Poiseuille flow in a narrow-gap geometry at low Taylor number. It was found that a complete laminarization occurred at a significantly lower Reynolds number compared to the non-rotating case. The differences in the reverse transition process between the spiral Poiseuille flow and plain Poiseuille flow were attributed to the modifications of the isotropy of the Reynolds stress tensor, caused by changes in the velocity pressure-strain redistribution mechanisms.

Velocity Distribution and the Moments of Turbulent Flow over a Sand-Gravel Mixture Bed

Anurag Sharma

Summary: The current study used a laboratory flume to examine the velocity distribution and velocity moments of turbulent flow over a sand-gravel mixture bed. The 3D instantaneous velocity data of water was collected using an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV), providing important data related to flow turbulence. The study found that the longitudinal velocity near the bed surface was lower and increased with flow depth. The von Karman constant was lower than the universal value. The Reynolds shear stress damping near the boundary indicated lower exchange of flow energy towards the boundary. The sand-gravel bed influenced turbulence intensities more in the streamwise direction than in the vertical direction. The study also analyzed flow anisotropy and the flatness factor.
