Development of a new high-throughput and small-size method for measuring sediment oxygen demand in lakes

Koichi Shimotori et al.

Summary: The newly developed SOD measurement method provides a faster and more feasible alternative to the traditional laboratory method, with the ability to take multiple measurements from a single sediment core sample, reducing uncertainty associated with sediment structure and providing reliable SOD data.

Nutrient regeneration from riverine high-molecular-weight dissolved organic matter through marine bacterial decomposition in a eutrophic coastal system: The Ariake Sea, Japan

Hiroyuki Takasu et al.

Summary: This study found that nutrient regeneration from riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) and marine DOM decomposition by coastal bacteria is comparable in a eutrophic coastal sea, suggesting that riverine DOM can serve as a source of nutrients to supplement marine ecosystems. Additionally, the release of NH4+ through riverine DOM degradation may contribute to prolonging red tides in the area, especially in the western Ariake Sea.

Long-term changes in red tide outbreaks in Xiamen Bay in China from 1986 to 2017

Chen Baohong et al.

Summary: Over the past 30 years, there has been an increase in red tide events in Xiamen Bay, with most occurrences in the West Sea and Tong'an Bay. Spring and early summer are the peak seasons for red tide outbreaks, while they are rare in autumn. Dinoflagellates are the main species responsible for red tide events, with a decrease in Diatom-induced red tides in recent years.

Composition and Distributions of Nitrogen and Phosphorus and Assessment of Eutrophication Status in the Maowei Sea

Lu Dongliang et al.

Summary: Maowei Sea is the largest oyster mariculture bay in Southwest China, with surface waters containing high levels of nutrients such as DON and DIP, indicating a moderate to severe eutrophication state influenced largely by land-based inputs.

Sediment oxygen demand and benthic foraminiferal faunas in the Arabian Gulf: A test of the method on a siliciclastic substrate

Thomas F. Garrison et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between environmental parameters and benthic foraminiferal assemblages in nearshore siliciclastic sediment in the Arabian Gulf. The water and sediments were found to be unpolluted and free of eutrophic enrichment, while the benthic foraminiferal assemblage was dominated by the genera Ammonia and Elphidium, typical of shallow water sandy substrates.

Benthic diffusive fluxes of organic and inorganic carbon, ammonium and phosphates from deep water sediments of the Baltic Sea

Monika Lengier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential release of dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, ammonium, and phosphates from Baltic Sea sediments. Results showed a high spatial variability in the release of these substances in the Baltic Sea, influenced by oxygen concentrations in the water column and inflows.

Eutrophication Driven by Aquaculture Fish Farms Controls Phytoplankton and Dinoflagellate Cyst Abundance in the Southern Coastal Waters of Korea

Yoonja Kang et al.

Summary: The study in eutrophic coastal waters of Korea found that water temperature showed seasonality, with dissolved inorganic nutrient levels varying between different time periods and locations. Multiple environmental factors were identified to affect the distribution of phytoplankton and dinoflagellate cysts.

Cockle as Second Intermediate Host of Trematode Parasites: Consequences for Sediment Bioturbation and Nutrient Fluxes across the Benthic Interface

Anais Richard et al.

Summary: The impact of trematode parasites on the behavior of their host can vary across different factors such as time period, host age, parasite species, and interaction with other environmental stressors. Despite high parasite intensity, the indirect effects on sediment bioturbation and biogeochemical fluxes may not always be significant in marine coastal environments.
