Hepatotoxicity of food-borne mycotoxins: molecular mechanism, anti-hepatotoxic medicines and target prediction

Haonan Ruan et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins, produced by fungi, pose a global food safety problem and a serious threat to health due to their hepatotoxicity. This paper reviews the molecular mechanisms and potential anti-MILI medicines of six food-borne MILI, predicting their targets through network toxicology to provide a theoretical basis for studying MILI toxicity mechanisms and developing effective strategies for managing MILI-related health issues in the future, ultimately accelerating food safety development.

Contamination status and health risk assessment of 31 mycotoxins in six edible and medicinal plants using a novel green defatting and depigmenting pretreatment coupled with LC-MS/MS

Qian Lu et al.

Summary: Mycotoxin contamination in edible and medicinal plant seeds is a potential toxicological concern. A novel method for the simultaneous determination of 31 mycotoxins was developed using a defatting and de-pigment clean-up pretreatment. The study found that more than 30% of the samples contained multiple mycotoxins, with some exceeding the limits defined in the European Pharmacopoeia.

Absorption and metabolism of modified mycotoxins of alternariol, alternariol monomethyl ether, and zearalenone in Caco-2 cells

Beate Nadine Appel (Kohn) et al.

Summary: This study investigated the absorption and metabolism of ZEN-, AOH-, and AME-glucosides using the Caco-2 cell system. The findings suggest that modified ZEN is less absorbed while modified Alternaria toxins are absorbed to a higher extent, with potential contribution to overall toxicity. Interestingly, it was also found that AOH-9-diglucoside is hydrolyzed to AOH-9-glucoside.

Male reproductive toxicity of zearalenone-meta-analysis with mechanism review

Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Zearalenone exposure can cause considerable damage to the reproductive system of rodents at all ages, including changes in epididymis weight, testicular weight, hormone levels, Leydig cell parameters, and semen quality. However, a clear dose-response relationship between Zearalenone exposure and reproductive system damage in male rodents was not identified. The exact underlying mechanism of Zearalenone-induced toxicity in the reproductive system remains largely unknown, but theories of estrogen-like effects and oxidative stress damage show promise.
