Atmospheric rivers drive exceptional Saharan dust transport towards Europe

Diana Francis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of atmospheric rivers from northwest Africa towards Europe in the winter season and evaluates their impact on snow melt in the Alps. The study finds that these events lead to significant changes in snow depth and surface albedo.

First triple-wavelength lidar observations of depolarization and extinction-to-backscatter ratios of Saharan dust

Moritz Haarig et al.

Summary: This study presents the first lidar measurements of Saharan dust over Leipzig, Germany, and compares the results with retrieval schemes. Differences between measured and retrieved values for the dust lidar ratio and linear depolarization ratio are discussed.

Linking the Different Diameter Types of Aspherical Desert Dust Indicates That Models Underestimate Coarse Dust Emission

Yue Huang et al.

Summary: Accurate conversions between different diameter types of dust aerosols are critical, especially considering the aspherical shape of dust particles. Current optical particle counters underestimate dust geometric diameter at coarse sizes, leading to substantial underestimation of coarse dust emissions by global aerosol models. This highlights the need for improved measurements and models to better understand the emission and impact of dust aerosols.

Properties of Saharan Dust Versus Local Urban Dust-A Case Study

Dominika M. Szczepanik et al.

Summary: On June 29-30, 2019, a huge amount of mineral dust from North Africa was forecasted to be transported to Poland, resulting in a unique dust event observed by lidar in Warsaw. The analyses conducted on the dust properties evolution revealed different characteristics of fine and coarse mode dust particles during the event, providing valuable data for future research and comparative studies.

Contribution of the world's main dust source regions to the global cycle of desert dust

Jasper F. Kok et al.

Summary: This study constrained the relative contributions of major dust source regions to the global dust cycle, finding that North African and Asian regions are the main contributors, and dust loading peaks in local spring and summer. The data obtained in this paper can be used to improve constraints on dust impacts on clouds, climate, biogeochemical cycles, and other parts of the Earth system.
