Change in fire frequency drives a shift in species composition in native Eucalyptus regnans forests: Implications for overstorey forest structure and transpiration

Shyanika Lakmali et al.

Summary: The study found that climate change is threatening the world's most iconic forests, affecting their successional trajectories. Specifically, in southeast Australia, the regrowth of Eucalyptus regnans forests is being hindered by increased wildfire frequency, leading to replacement by other species like Acacia dealbata. Comparing these two forest types at different ages, the study revealed significant differences in overstorey structure and transpiration, indicating a significant eco-hydrologic change as a result of this species replacement. This finding suggests that water yield in forested catchments may diverge due to widespread species replacement.

Intercomparison of Real and Simulated GEDI Observations across Sclerophyll Forests

Sven Huettermann et al.

Summary: Forest structure is a crucial variable in ecology, fire behavior, and carbon management. New spaceborne lidar sensors, like GEDI, allow for global mapping of forest structure. This study compared real and simulated GEDI observations and found that the simulator produced more accurate metrics for canopy height and ground detection. Despite some differences between real and simulated GEDI observations, the study suggests that both data sources are compatible and can be used together in monitoring forest structure over time.

Factors affecting relative height and ground elevation estimations of GEDI among forest types across the conterminous USA

Cangjiao Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of NASA's GEDI spaceborne LiDAR system in different forest types and identified factors influencing its performance. The results showed that GEDI achieved accurate measurements of ground elevation and forest height, with variations observed among different forest profiles. Land surface attributes, observing sensor system characteristics, and collection time differences were found to be important factors affecting GEDI performance, with geolocation error being particularly influential for canopy height estimation.

The fuel-climate-fire conundrum: How will fire regimes change in temperate eucalypt forests under climate change?

Sarah C. McColl-Gausden et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the direct and indirect effects of climate on fire regime change in temperate forests in southeastern Australia. The results indicate that future climate change will intensify fire regimes by increasing wildfire extent and intensity and decreasing fire interval. The role of future fuel also interacts with climate change, either synergistically or antagonistically, depending on the landscape and fire regime attribute. These findings suggest that temperate ecosystems in southeastern Australia are likely to experience shifts in fire regimes in the coming decades.

Summary: This study evaluates the accuracy of GEDI sensor in an Alpine forest environment and finds that terrain slope is the most influential factor. Caution should be exercised when using a single GEDI footprint in steep environments. Other factors have minimal impact on terrain height accuracy but significantly affect canopy height.

Summary: Estimation of forest stocking density per hectare is crucial for understanding forest dynamics post disturbances, and in this study, a novel bottom-up approach for individual tree and crown delineation (ITCD) using UAS LiDAR technology was developed and evaluated across 39 flight sites. The algorithm achieved a high mean F-score of 0.91 and accurately estimated the forest stocking density across the sites.

Summary: Accurate information on global forest distribution and 3D structure is crucial for assessing forest biomass stocks and future terrestrial Carbon sink projections. The GEDI LiDAR sensor provides unprecedented sampling of forest structural properties, with VIIRS data successfully extrapolating GEDI measurements for wall-to-wall forest structure maps in the conterminous US.
