Noctiluca blooms in the East China Sea bounded by ocean fronts

Summary: A recent study has shown that the satellite-based detection of blooms of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate, red Noctiluca scintillans (RNS), is possible. The study examined RNS bloom patterns in the East China Sea (ECS) between 2000 and 2017, and supplemented it with satellite observations from 2018 to 2020. The 21-year bloom record revealed varying bloom distributions in different years, with an increasing trend in the annual cumulative bloom footprint, which is constrained by major ocean fronts such as the Kuroshio Front. The 2020 observation is particularly significant, as it shows the transport of the bloom to the most northeast location of the footprint due to additional discharge from the 2020 Yangtze River flood event and ocean currents, even though the riverine influence extends beyond the RNS footprint.
