Assessment of soil erosion models for predicting soil loss in cracked vegetated compacted surface layer

Manash Jyoti Bora et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of three popular soil erosion models for estimating soil loss of compacted surface layer of cover system, with the MMF model found to be effective. However, the MMF model overestimated soil erosion at vegetation cover above 60%, while RUSLE and WEPP models performed poorly at high rainfall intensity and underestimated for vegetation cover above 3%. Existing models were unable to adequately capture the mechanisms of root reinforcement and water uptake-induced soil suction on soil loss mitigation. Further studies are needed to improve existing erosion models for compacted surface layer incorporating the effects of desiccation and vegetation.

Development of rill erosion and its simulation with cellular automata-rill model in Chinese Loess Plateau

Liquan Sun et al.

Summary: The study utilized TLS and CA-Rill model to evaluate rill erosion on arable soils in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Results indicated that the methods effectively described erosion processes but poorly simulated sediment processes. Rill erosion became the dominant pattern after 30 minutes of rainfall, with morphological parameters of rills increasing significantly. The methods used could provide valuable reference for soil erosion monitoring and modeling.

Combined Use of Aerial Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Detecting Geomorphological Changes in Hornsund, Svalbard

Malgorzata Blaszczyk et al.

Summary: This study assessed the accuracy of high-resolution DEMs derived from aerial images and TLS point clouds in the Arctic region. While both DEMs had data gaps due to insufficient overlaps and limited sensing range, integrating the two techniques created a continuous and gapless DEM for scientific use in Svalbard, highlighting the potential for combining different techniques to represent active processes in the region.

Microtopographic Controls on Erosion and Deposition of a Rilled Hillslope in Eastern Tennessee, USA

Yingkui Li et al.

Summary: Topography plays a key role in shaping erosion and deposition patterns of different landscapes. This study focused on investigating the influence of various microtopographic factors on rill erosion and deposition on a hillslope. The results demonstrate that the contributing area is the most important factor, while factors such as slope, roughness, aspect, and terrain wetness index also play a role in sediment dynamics.

Las2DoD: Change Detection Based on Digital Elevation Models Derived from Dense Point Clouds with Spatially Varied Uncertainty

Gene Bailey et al.

Summary: This study presents a straightforward method, Las2DoD, to quantify surface change directly from point clouds. The method was applied to two case studies of erosion and showed higher accuracy in measuring sediment compared to other commonly used methods. Las2DoD is able to capture more low-magnitude changes and is particularly useful in cases where surface changes are small but contribute significantly to the total surface change.

Effects of gully control measures on sediment yield and connectivity in wooded rangelands

Alberto Alfonso-Torreno et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of gully control measures on runoff and sediment transport processes in an agroforestry system in SW Spain. The results showed that the control measures did not affect flood discharge, but reduced suspended sediment concentration by 65%. The implementation of runoff and sediment control measures stabilized the expansion of the channel network and had short-term beneficial effects. Long-term monitoring is needed to understand the long-term effects.

Multi-directional change detection between point clouds

Jack G. Williams et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method for change detection, providing more accurate measurements of rockfall and movement in geological scenes. By deriving Dominant Movement Directions (DMD), the method avoids the influence of local surface normals in measuring changes. The new approach has been successful in three LiDAR-derived cases, achieving more accurate measurements in comparison.

Development of gully erosion processes: A 3D investigation based on field scouring experiments and laser scanning

Chendi Gao et al.

Summary: Gully erosion involves both horizontal and vertical cycles of development, with water erosion and collapses being the main driving forces. Mass movements generally do not contribute significantly to the total mass or sediment yield of gully erosion, but play a key role in the morphological development of gullies, particularly in the expansion of gully heads. Further research is needed to better understand the complex relationships between mass movements, sediment yield, and broader runoff and erosion processes in gully erosion.

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Hillslope Erosion Investigated Based on Field Scouring Experiments and Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Pengfei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal patterns of field hillslope erosion processes using runoff scouring experiments and terrestrial laser scanning. The results showed that the cumulative sediment yields derived from TLS were more accurate than the consecutive sediment yields. The development of hillslope erosion was found to experience three major stages, and rill development had a significant impact on sediment yield. Additionally, the relationship between sediment yield and runoff discharge was found to be weak.

Comparing High Accuracy t-LiDAR and UAV-SfM Derived Point Clouds for Geomorphological Change Detection

Simoni Alexiou et al.

Summary: The analysis of two small semi-mountainous catchments in central Evia island, Greece, demonstrated the advantages of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) based change detection methods for soil erosion assessment. The results showed that point clouds derived from both methods can accurately estimate soil erosion movements and provide precise delineation of erosion patterns within a short period of time. The UAV-derived point clouds were found to be more useful for channel erosion display and measurement, while TLS was more accurate for estimating slope wash erosion.
