Lightning Potential Index and its spatial and temporal characteristics in COSMO NWP model

Iva Babunkova Uhlirova et al.

Summary: This study predicts lightning activity using the Lightning Potential Index (LPI) and analyzes its spatial and temporal characteristics. The results show that 2-moment cloud microphysics provides better LPI forecasts and the distribution of predicted lightning activity is consistent with recorded lightning discharges. The spatial verification reveals a probability of lightning discharge occurrence of approximately 30-90% and a proportion of successfully predicted lightning discharges reaching up to 77%. Temporal verification of LPI is even more efficient, with a maximum time difference of 45 minutes between forecasted and detected lightning activity.

Impact of Lightning Data Assimilation on the Short-Term Precipitation Forecast over the Central Mediterranean Sea

Rosa Claudia Torcasio et al.

Summary: Lightning data assimilation (LDA) has a positive impact on precipitation forecasts over the central Mediterranean Sea around Italy, improving the correlation between predicted and observed precipitation over wide areas of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas. The use of LDA also leads to a better representation of precipitation patterns, decreasing false alarms and increasing hits in the forecast, particularly evident in the case study of 12 November 2019.
