Classification of synoptic weather clusters associated with dust accumulation over southeastern areas of the Caspian Sea (Northeast Iran and Karakum desert)

Kaveh Mohammadpour et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatial patterns of dust accumulation in northeast Iran and the Karakum Desert based on daily-mean total and dust aerosol optical depth (TAOD, DAOD) and meteorological fields from the Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC) and ERA-Interim reanalysis. The results show that changes in high pressures and wind regimes in spring and summer contribute to dust storms and dust accumulation in the region. The convergence of southwest and northeast winds in northeast Iran and the Karakum Desert leads to dust accumulation, while the absence of Qibla flow allows northerly winds to travel to the north coast of the Arabian Sea in summer. The dust accumulation in northeast Iran and the Karakum Desert is less than that in Pakistan and the Thar desert.

Relationships between Near-Surface Horizontal Dust Fluxes and Dust Depositions at the Centre and Edge of the Taklamakan Desert

Wen Huo et al.

Summary: The emission, transport, and deposition of dust are important factors in dust aerosol studies. However, there is limited research on the relationships between key parameters of dust transport, especially in typical dust source areas. This study investigates the quantitative relationship between near-surface horizontal dust fluxes and dust depositions in desert source areas. The results show that the dust depositions and dust fluxes peak during high dust storm periods, with the highest accumulation observed in spring. The study also finds that both dust fluxes and depositions decrease with increasing height in one location, while no clear pattern is observed in another location. Additionally, the size and origin of dust particles in the depositions vary between the two locations.

Interactions of Asian mineral dust with Indian summer monsoon: Recent advances and challenges

Qinjian Jin et al.

Summary: The Indian summer monsoon is crucial for providing the majority of annual rainfall to the Indian subcontinent and affecting over a quarter of the world's population. Asia is also a significant source of dust, and the interactions between dust and the monsoon are increasingly studied. Dust particles can modulate monsoon circulation and precipitation, while the monsoon can in turn influence dust emissions and deposition.
