Making (remote) sense of lianas

Geertje M. F. van der Heijden et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of remote sensing technology in studying the ecology of lianas. Lianas are important components of tropical ecosystems, but little is known about their distribution in forest canopies. Remote sensing technology can help overcome the limitations of traditional field methods and provide important insights into liana ecology.

Relationships between tree-community composition and regeneration potential of Shorea trees in logged-over tropical rain forests

Yoshimi Sawada et al.

Summary: Logged-over forests in Southeast Asia vary greatly in tree-community composition, with a focus on whether modified forests can recover to their original states. Research on the regeneration potential of Shorea trees in different forest types showed a close relationship between tree-community composition and regeneration potential. The abrupt reduction in seedling abundance and distribution morphology with decreasing forest intactness indicates a loss of regeneration potential.

Remote sensing liana infestation in an aseasonal tropical forest: addressing mismatch in spatial units of analyses

Chris J. Chandler et al.

Summary: This study effectively assessed liana infestation in aseasonal tropical forest using remote sensing, highlighting that a pixel-based classification was more effective in predicting liana infestation compared to an object-based approach. Differences in accuracy between object- and pixel-based classifications were not significant when liana infestation was grouped into three classes, indicating the potential usefulness of both methods for informing conservation and forest management efforts.

Why forest fails to recover after repeated wildfires in Amazonian floodplains? Experimental evidence on tree recruitment limitation

Bernardo M. Flores et al.

Summary: Amazonian floodplain forests are vulnerable to wildfires during extreme droughts, with tree recruitment failures potentially caused by environmental filtering. Despite challenges, floodplain trees can still germinate and establish in burnt forests, suggesting active restoration initiatives may aid in accelerating recovery.

A Forest Monitoring System for Tanzania

Elikana John et al.

Summary: Tropical forests provide essential ecosystem services but are under pressure. Tanzania is experiencing significant forest cover changes, with limited monitoring due to lack of knowledge and tools. A comprehensive forest monitoring system using Earth Observation data can help combat biodiversity loss.

Detection of Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Liana Infestation Using Satellite-Derived Imagery

Chris J. Chandler et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of satellite-based remote sensing in detecting spatial and temporal patterns of liana infestation in primary and selectively logged forests in Sabah, Borneo. Results showed a positive relationship between liana infestation and Greenness Index (GI) across different forest types and El Nino-induced drought periods. Using a neural network classification, an increase in severely liana infested pixels from 2016 to 2019 was observed, indicating a potential increase in liana abundance. This study is the first to demonstrate the accurate detection of liana infestation across closed-canopy tropical forests using satellite imagery, with implications for understanding the impacts of lianas on carbon dynamics globally.
