Constraints on the interior structure of Phobos from tidal deformation modeling

Andrei A. Dmitrovskii et al.

Summary: Phobos is one of the two moons of Mars, and its interior structure and bulk composition remain unclear, which are crucial for solving the origin of the satellites. By constructing a series of internal models and relying on currently available geophysical data, we find that models with a density increase can be distinguished from other models.

Decoupled and coupled moons' ephemerides estimation strategies application to the JUICE mission

M. Fayolle et al.

Summary: This study introduces a coupled estimation strategy for reconstructing natural satellites' ephemerides, which can provide more accurate estimation of the satellites' state uncertainties compared to the traditional decoupled approach. It shows potential improvements in ephemerides for the Galilean moons.

Observability of Ganymede's gravity anomalies related to surface features by the 3GM experiment onboard ESA's JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission

De Marchi Fabrizio et al.

Summary: The 3GM experiment on JUICE will measure the gravity fields of Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede, with a focus on Ganymede's dark and bright terrain distribution. By comparing models and simulating the expected gravity field, the data collected may help distinguish contributions from the deep interior and surface features on Ganymede.

Mars moon ephemerides after 14 years of Mars Express data

V Lainey et al.

Summary: The Mars Express mission has provided accurate astrometric data of the Mars moons Phobos and Deimos, but further investigation into higher order harmonics and an improved rotation model is needed to improve accuracy. Discrepancies between astrometric data from different spacecraft suggest a biased phase correction may be affecting the results. The current precision of the ephemerides is expected to be in the range of a few hundred meters for Phobos and several hundred meters for Deimos, with the need for confirmation through independent observational means.

Internal rubble properties of asteroid (101955) Bennu

P. Tricarico et al.

Summary: The OSIRIS-REx mission's exploration of asteroid Bennu has provided insights into its interior structure and confirmed the rubble-pile model. Studies on density and size-frequency distribution index show consistency between the interior and surface of Bennu.

Dynamical evidence for Phobos and Deimos as remnants of a disrupted common progenitor

Amirhossein Bagheri et al.

Summary: The origin of Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, remains unclear. While capture has been questioned, in situ formation models have been proposed as alternatives. A hypothesis combining geophysical and tidal-evolution modeling suggests that Phobos and Deimos originated from disintegration of a common progenitor, with Phobos likely to impact Mars or be disrupted within around 39 million years.

Transfers around Phobos via bifurcated retrograde orbits: Applications to Martian Moons eXploration mission

Nishanth Pushparaj et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on designing transfer trajectories between Quasi-Satellite Orbits (QSO) around Phobos and explores transfer strategies using horizontal bifurcated Multi-Revolution Periodic QSOs (MP-QSOs). It is found that transfers via MP-QSOs provide insights on minimum transfer speeds and parameters determining transfer costs, especially between different altitudes QSOs.

MMX geodesy investigations: science requirements and observation strategy

Koji Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The Japanese MMX mission, scheduled for launch in 2024, aims to investigate the origin of Phobos and Deimos, conduct comprehensive remote-sensing measurements, and return regolith samples from Phobos. Geodetic measurements of gravity, shape, and rotation parameter provide constraints on the internal structure, with mission instruments and operational strategies key to meeting the mission requirements.A preliminary imaging strategy from a quasi-satellite orbit is expected to create a base shape model in the early stage of the mission, with geodetic products playing a crucial role in interpreting data from various mission instruments and selecting possible landing sites.

Nicola Baresi et al.

Summary: The Martian Moons eXploration mission aims to retrieve samples from the surface of Phobos, with the spacecraft planned to enter quasi-satellite orbits upon arrival for over three years of study. The paper presents the orbit design and maintenance strategy within the framework of the elliptic Hill problem, including numerical continuation procedures and sensitivity analyses to ensure the robustness of the mission trajectories.
