Impact of biomass burning and stratospheric intrusions in the remote South Pacific Ocean troposphere

Nikos Daskalakis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability of ozone mixing ratio in the pristine South Pacific Ocean using 21-year-long ozone records. The findings reveal that even the most pristine oceanic region is influenced by distant biomass burning emissions, with significant impacts on CO and ozone levels in the area.

Reconstructing 1-km-resolution high-quality PM2.5 data records from 2000 to 2018 in China: spatiotemporal variations and policy implications

Jing Wei et al.

Summary: This study utilized satellite remote sensing and modeling to construct a 1 km resolution PM2.5 dataset for China from 2000 to 2018, revealing a decrease in PM2.5 concentrations over the past two decades, especially accelerating in the last six years. The North China Plain remains the most polluted region in China, while significant improvements are observed in the Pearl and Yangtze River Deltas.

Global and regional variations in aerosol loading during COVID-19 imposed lockdown

S. D. Sanap

Summary: The study shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, there was a reduction in aerosol loading over most global hotspots, with some regions like the Amazon, northern South America, Mexico, South-West Africa, and South East Asia experiencing abnormally high aerosol burdens due to wildfire emissions.

Cloud-Nucleating Particles Over the Southern Ocean in a Changing Climate

Cynthia H. Twohy et al.

Summary: Stratocumulus clouds over the Southern Ocean are likely to contain fewer droplets and exist in a supercooled phase due to limited cloud-nucleating particles, with biogenic sulfur-based particles and organic ice nucleating particles playing major roles. As global warming leads to decreased sea ice, increased phytoplankton activity, and stronger winds near Antarctica, cloud nucleating particles may increase, making clouds in the region more reflective. Detailed modeling studies are necessary to verify this hypothesis due to the complexity of ocean-cloud-climate feedbacks in the Southern Ocean.

Aerosol Properties in Cloudy Environments from Remote Sensing Observations A Review of the Current State of Knowledge

A. Marshak et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of aerosol properties near clouds and quantitatively compares them with aerosols far from clouds. It discusses the correlation (and anticorrelation) between proximity to cloud and aerosol properties, demonstrates retrieval artifacts near clouds, and describes possible corrections for near-cloud enhancement in remote sensing retrievals. This study is timely in view of science definition studies for NASA's Aerosol, Cloud, Convection and Precipitation (ACCP) mission, which aims to directly link aerosol properties to nearby clouds.
