How Ethanolic Disinfectants Disintegrate Coronavirus Model Membranes: A Dissipative Particle Dynamics Simulation Study

Summary: In this study, dissipative particle dynamics models were used to investigate the effects of ethanol on coronavirus model membranes. It was found that 5-10 mol% ethanol significantly weakens the membranes, and the magnitude of the effect depends on the ethanol concentration and membrane composition. The study also revealed that membranes with higher DPPC content are more stable against ethanol and that the presence of ethanol disrupts mixed membranes depending on their composition.

Moulding hydrodynamic 2D-crystals upon parametric Faraday waves in shear-functionalized water surfaces

Summary: The study demonstrates that dynamically frozen Faraday waves, called 2D hydrodynamic crystals, appear as ordered patterns of nonlinear gravity-capillary modes on water surfaces functionalized with soluble surfactants. The phase coherence and increased surface rigidity lead to the Faraday waves ordering transition, allowing for reversible control of the hydrodynamic crystals' degree of order, unit cell size, and symmetry. These newly discovered hydrodynamic crystals could be utilized in touchless strategies for soft matter and biological scaffolding, enhanced under external control of Faraday waves coherence.
