Widespread occurrence of microplastic pollution in open sea surface waters: Evidence from the mid-North Pacific Ocean

Zhong Pan et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a widespread and pressing environmental crisis in the mid-North Pacific Ocean, with potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. This study collected surface water samples and used diversity index analysis and cluster analysis to explore the abundance, distribution, and characterization of microplastics, and inferred the sources of microplastic pollution.

Microplastics in Surface Waters and Sediments in the Sebou Estuary and Atlantic Coast, Morocco

S. Haddout et al.

Summary: The study found that stations adjacent to Kenitra City had significantly higher levels of microplastics compared to the Atlantic Coast, likely due to population density and human activity. The majority of the detected microplastics were between 0.1 and 0.5 mm in size, followed by 0.5 to 1 mm. The predominant shape of microplastics in water and sediments was fragments.

The occurrence and abundance of microplastics in surface water of the midstream and downstream of the Cisadane River, Indonesia

Lilik Sulistyowati et al.

Summary: This study investigates microplastic contamination in the midstream to downstream of the Cisadane River and its confluence with the Java Sea. The abundance of microplastics was found to be higher in the downstream area compared to the midstream. The dominant types of microplastic polymers identified were polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene. Microplastic fragments with diameters ranging from 500 to 1000 micrometers were prevalent in surface water samples. This study highlights possible microplastic pollution hotspots in the Cisadane rivers and identifies locations for additional sampling. Urban runoff and landfill discharge have a significant impact on the accumulation and movement of microplastics from the inland to the Cisadane estuarine area. Further research is needed to determine the sources and pathways of these microplastic particles entering rivers.

Heavy metals in the plastisphere of marine microplastics: adsorption mechanisms and composite risk

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption mechanisms and composite risks of heavy metals adhered to microplastic surfaces were investigated. The results showed that heavy metals in the plastisphere were influenced by the surrounding matrices and some heavy metals were positively correlated with the specific surface area of the microplastics. Cluster analysis indicated that some heavy metals were derived from anthropogenic sources, suggesting that plastics can adsorb adventive heavy metals. A new composite risk assessment method for heavy metals and microplastics was also established.

Interactions and effects of microplastics with heavy metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments

Noreen Khalid et al.

Summary: Contamination of waters and soils with microplastics (MPs) is a global environmental issue, posing a threat to ecosystems and organism health; The co-occurrence of MPs with heavy metals may enhance the transfer of toxic metals in the food chain; Understanding the interactions of MPs with heavy metals in different ecosystems is crucial for assessing their ecotoxic effects.

Microplastic and other anthropogenic microparticles in water and sediments of Lake Simcoe

Miguel Eduardo L. Felismino et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics and other anthropogenic microparticles in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, with lower abundances compared to other large freshwater lakes. Fibers were the most common morphology, while fragments were predominant in manta trawl samples. The distribution of microplastics appeared to be influenced by proximity to urban centers and prevailing winds in surface water manta trawls.

Analysis of small microplastics in coastal surface water samples of the subtropical island of Okinawa, Japan

Christina Ripken et al.

Summary: Research indicates that marine plastic debris is a global environmental issue, with microplastic particles posing the highest potential harm to marine ecosystems. Chemical composition analysis reveals that low-density polyethylene is the dominant component of analyzed microplastics, with polystyrene being the smallest. Plastics were found at all test sites, with the highest concentration in areas with high human activities.

The toxic impacts of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haematic parameters in a marine bivalve species and their potential mechanisms of action

Shuge Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that both MPs and PAHs in the marine ecosystem may have adverse effects on the haematic parameters of blood clams, including decreased total haemocyte count, changes in haematic composition, and inhibition of haemocyte phagocytosis. Exposure to MPs and PAHs may lead to toxic impacts on haematic parameters by increasing intracellular ROS contents, causing LPO and DNA damage, reducing haemocyte viability, and disrupting important molecular signaling pathways. Moreover, coexposure to MPs and PAHs resulted in more severe adverse impacts on all parameters, indicating a significant synergistic effect.

Baseline assessment of microplastic concentrations in marine and freshwater environments of a developing Southeast Asian country, Viet Nam

Emilie Strady et al.

Summary: Assessment of microplastic concentrations in aquatic environments is increasing worldwide, but remains under-evaluated in developing countries. Developed protocols for sampling, analysis, and observations may not fully adapt to developing countries due to disparities in resources. Researchers in Vietnam have developed an adapted methodology for monitoring microplastic pollution, finding that fibers dominate over fragments in most environments.
