Selective conversion of corncob hemicellulose to xylose via hydrothermal treatment with Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl

Dong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a new catalyst (Fe-2(SO4)(3)-NaCl) was used for the selective conversion of corncob hemicellulose to xylose via hydrothermal treatment. The results showed that Fe-2(SO4)(3) played a crucial role in breaking the interactions among the major components, while NaCl and Fe-2(SO4)(3) inhibited the conversion of lignin and cellulose, respectively. The co-addition of Fe-2(SO4)(3) and NaCl promoted the selective dissolution of hemicellulose, leaving most of the cellulose and lignin unreacted. A second hydrothermal treatment on the hemicellulose-free residue resulted in the conversion of cellulose and the production of fructose. Therefore, this study proposed a potential route for the comprehensive utilization of corncobs.

Enzymolysis-treated wood-derived hierarchical porous carbon for fluorescence-functionalized phase change materials

Yaqiong Li et al.

Summary: The current obstacles hindering the development and industrial application of phase change materials (PCMs) include low thermal conductivity, high cost, leakage, and poor mechanical performance. This study aims to enhance the thermal conductivity and power capacity of PCMs by using abundant biomass-derived carbon as supports. Cellulase is used to hydrolyze cellulose in wood and create micropores, which leads to effective construction of adsorption sites during the subsequent pyrolysis process. The resulting hierarchical porous carbon infiltrates polyethylene glycol (PEG) and enhances crystallization. This strategy combines good mechanical performance, high energy storage capacity, anisotropic thermal conductivity, and improved thermal stability. Furthermore, the composite PCMs loaded with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) integrate fluorescent function and thermal energy storage, providing potential applications in specific equipment.

Structural and physico-chemical characterization of industrial hemp hurd: Impacts of chemical pretreatments and mechanical refining

Syed M. Q. Bokhari et al.

Summary: This study investigated an economical and environmentally friendly decortication method using metal oxide-assisted hydrogen peroxide oxidization to separate hemp bast and hurd from wasted industrial hemp stalk. Various chemical pretreatments and mechanical refining were used to characterize the resulting hemp hurd comprehensively. Chemical pretreatments disintegrated the native cell wall structure and fractionated hemp hurd into lignocellulosic bio-aggregates with differentiated properties. Comparing different pretreatments, sequential alkaline and bleaching pretreatments proved to be effective in removing non-cellulosic components and improving the crystalline structure and thermal stability of hemp hurd fibers.
