Population Genomics Trace Clonal Diversification and Intercontinental Migration of an Emerging Fungal Pathogen of Boxwood

Nicholas LeBlanc et al.

Summary: Boxwood blight was first documented in Europe before spreading to North America with negative impacts on the ornamental industry. Genetic analysis showed limited gene flow between the two sister species of fungal plant pathogens causing the disease, but indicated multiple introduction events of the pathogen into the United States.

Transcriptome-Derived Amplicon Sequencing Markers Elucidate the US Podosphaera macularis Population Structure Across Feral and Commercial Plantings of Humulus lupulus

William A. Weldon et al.

Summary: The study illustrates the distribution relationships between P. macularis populations in the United States and internationally, and develops a high-throughput marker platform for tracking the flow of genotypes. Additionally, a high-resolution distribution map of P. macularis mating type is generated.

Tracing the Origin and Evolutionary History of Pyricularia oryzae Infecting Maize and Barnyard Grass

Adel Pordel et al.

Summary: Blast disease is a notorious fungal disease causing dramatic yield losses on major food crops like rice and wheat. The emergence of blast disease on maize in Iran, as well as epidemics on barnyard grass, raises concerns about potential yield losses and geographic expansion of the disease. Phylogenetic analyses indicate independent host-range expansion events from barnyard grass to maize.

Emergence and diversification of a highly invasive chestnut pathogen lineage across southeastern Europe

Lea Stauber et al.

Summary: The invasive chestnut blight fungus in southeastern Europe emerged from a highly diverse European genotype pool, rather than from a secondary introduction from Asia or North America. The invasion process was mainly clonal and dominated by a single mating type, indicating a fitness advantage of asexual reproduction.

Signatures of Post-Glacial Genetic Isolation and Human-Driven Migration in the Dothistroma Needle Blight Pathogen in Western Canada

Arnaud Capron et al.

Summary: Many tree improvement programs are incorporating assisted gene flow strategies to match reforestation efforts with future climates. Study of the lodgepole pine pathogen populations in western Canada showed distinct genetic lineages diverged between 31.4 and 7.2 thousand years ago. The movement of planting material may have major consequences by facilitating secondary contact between genetically isolated pathogens.
