Clinical characteristics of late-life depression predicting mortality

Karen S. van den Berg et al.

Summary: Depression in older adults is associated with increased mortality rates, with only minor depression showing a significant risk for mortality independent of lifestyle factors and multiple drug prescriptions. Unhealthy lifestyle characteristics and the number of prescribed medications may explain the higher mortality risk in depressed older individuals, while minor depression may indicate an alternative pathway towards mortality in this population.

Is the center for epidemiologic studies depression scale as useful as the geriatric depression scale in screening for late-life depression? A systematic review

Seong-Hi Park et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the predictive validity of the CES-D scale for late-life depression in individuals over 50 years old and found that the CES-D showed similar predictive validity compared to the GDS developed in older adults. The CES-D is a useful tool for screening late-life depression in older adults over the age of 50.

Self-rated health trajectory and frailty among community-dwelling older adults: evidence from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging (TLSA)

Wei-Min Chu et al.

Summary: This study in Taiwan found that constantly poor self-rated health was associated with increased risk of frailty in older individuals, while constantly good and good-to-fair self-rated health were associated with reduced risks of frailty. This suggests that self-rated health can be used as a predictive tool for future frailty among older adults, and interventions such as diet and exercise may help prevent frailty in high-risk individuals with consistently low self-rated health.
