Water Polo Offensive Methods after the 2018 FINA Rules Update

Sofia Canossa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate whether elite national teams from Eastern Europe and other countries adopted different offensive playing styles after rule changes in water polo, and whether these changes induced a more dynamic game. The study analyzed 648 offensive sequences from top-ranked national squads at the 2019 FINA World Championship. The findings revealed that there were no confirmed differences in offensive styles between Eastern European and non-Eastern European teams. However, offensive trends were identified, and some guidelines were suggested to distinguish between static and dynamic playing models. The study suggested that the rule changes did not have the expected effects on game dynamics.
