Drought disaster monitoring and land use dynamics: identification of drought drivers using regression-based algorithms

Israel R. Orimoloye et al.

Summary: Droughts pose significant threats to South Africa and other arid regions due to low rainfall and water scarcity. Studies have shown that droughts are common in African drylands and their frequency is increasing. The Free State Province in South Africa experiences warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters, and has been severely affected by drought events in recent years. While various models and techniques have been used for drought prediction and mapping in arid and semi-arid areas, the application of machine learning algorithms is still emerging, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, studies have indicated the high potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods in assessing, predicting, and identifying extreme events like drought. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate drought dynamics in the Free State Province and identify the drivers of drought using regression-based algorithms.

Assessment of land-use and land-cover changes in Pangari watershed area (MS), India, based on the remote sensing and GIS techniques

Chaitanya B. Pande et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the assessment of land-use and land-cover change detection mapping in order to effectively plan and manage environment, land-use policy, and hydrological system in the study area. The results show changes in land-use and land-cover classes and vegetation after the implementation of a soil and water conservation project for five years. The use of remote sensing and GIS techniques played a crucial role in analyzing land-use and land-cover mapping during different years, providing valuable information for policy-making and management.

Quantitative assessment of regional land use and climate change impact on runoff across Gilgit watershed

Muhammad Shahid et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of climate change and land use changes on runoff in the Gilgit watershed using the SWAT model, MK and Pettitt tests, and IHA analysis. The results showed significant increasing trends in precipitation, temperature, and runoff, with a high contribution of CC to runoff changes.
