Relationships between dissolved black carbon and dissolved organic matter in streams

Youhei Yamashita et al.

Summary: Atmospheric deposition of soot is likely a major source of dissolved black carbon (DBC) in streams, which is linearly related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. The quality of DBC correlates with qualitative parameters of bulk dissolved organic matter (DOM), indicating a linkage between the transfer mechanism of soot-derived DBC and high-molecular-weight aromatic DOM.

Disinfection by-product (DBP) research in China: Are we on the track?

Huiyu Dong et al.

Summary: China has made significant achievements in research on disinfection by-products (DBP), including the discovery of known DBPs in Chinese drinking water, enhanced removal of DBP precursors in water treatment processes, optimization of disinfection to minimize DBP formation, and identification of unknown DBPs in drinking water. Despite covering the entire formation process of DBPs, there is still a challenge in effectively controlling the drinking water quality risk induced by DBPs. An integrated research framework including chemistry, toxicology, engineering, and epidemiology is crucial in addressing this challenge.

Effects of reductive inorganics and NOM on the formation of chlorite in the chlorine dioxide disinfection of drinking water

Biao Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that in chlorine dioxide disinfection, Fe2+ and S2- mainly reduced ClO2 to ClO2-, while Mn2+ had lower reaction efficiency. Among the four NOMs, humic acid and fulvic acid had active reactions with ClO2.

Characteristics of trihalomethane and haloacetic acid precursors in filter backwash and sedimentation sludge waters during drinking water treatment

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the precursors of THMs and HAAs in filter backwash water and sedimentation sludge water, revealing that hydrophilic organic matter was the main precursor of THMs and HAAs, while hydrophobic organic matter also played an important role in the formation of HAAs. Corresponding treatment strategies should be considered to avoid the formation of THMs and HAAs.

The Burn: water quality and microbiological impacts related to limited free chlorine disinfection periods in a chloramine system

Katherine Alfredo

Summary: The study found that a short free chlorine disinfection period had limited impact on nitrification within the distribution system, but could lead to increased iron concentrations, raising concerns about consumer water quality. Locations with consistently high chlorine residuals showed significant changes in bulk water microbial community, while microbial communities of the scoured biofilms remained similar throughout the study.
