The Contribution of Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation to the Improvement in Motor Functions and Quality of Life

Inken Toedt et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease, finding a correlation between the stimulated part of the STN and improvements in symptom control and quality of life.

A Comparison of Functional Abilities in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Parkinson's Disease with Mild Cognitive Impairment Using Multiple Assessment Methods

Maureen Schmitter-Edgecombe et al.

Summary: This study found that both the PD-MCI and MCI groups performed more poorly on overall IADL measures compared to HOAs. However, on the direct-observation measure, the PD-MCI group took longer and made more inefficient and irrelevant/off-task errors, while the MCI group made more omission and substitution errors. Cognitive and motor abilities had varying impacts on the everyday task difficulties of these two groups.

Summary: The study suggests that self-reported ADL impairments assessed by the FAQ are related to the severity of cognitive impairment in PD, showing moderate specificity in differentiating cognitive status in PD patients.

Functional autonomy in dementia of the Alzheimer's type, mild cognitive impairment, and healthy aging: a meta-analysis

Manuela Altieri et al.

Summary: The study compared performance on both BADLs and IADLs in healthy individuals, those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Results showed that AD patients had more difficulties in both BADLs and IADLs compared to HC and MCI groups, while MCI patients showed more difficulties in both IADLs and BADLs than HC. Meta-regression analysis revealed that the percentage of males in the samples was a significant predictor for comparing total BADL scores between MCI and HC, and age at evaluation predicted the effect sizes on some single IADLs between AD and HC.

Which Neuropsychological Tests? Predicting Cognitive Decline and Dementia in Parkinson's Disease in the ICICLE-PD Cohort

Rachael A. Lawson et al.

Summary: The study identified that cognitive decline is sensitive to early Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) development over time. Impaired global cognition, visual memory, and attention were found to be the best predictors for early PDD. Simple tests like impaired global cognition and semantic fluency were also found to be highly valuable in a clinical setting.

Macular microcirculation characteristics in Parkinson's disease evaluated by OCT-Angiography: a literature review

Evita Evangelia Christou et al.

Summary: The retina may serve as a predictive factor for neurodegenerative disorders, with recent use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) in studying macular microcirculation changes in Parkinson's disease (PD). While preliminary evidence suggests OCT-A could be a useful biomarker for cerebral vasculature in PD, further research is needed to confirm its predictive value in clinical practice.
