The Mitochondrial Antioxidant Sirtuin3 Cooperates with Lipid Metabolism to Safeguard Neurogenesis in Aging and Depression

Sonia Sa Santos et al.

Summary: Neural stem cells (NSCs) play a crucial role in memory and buffering depressive behavior in the adult brain. This study shows that the deacetylase Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) plays a role in regulating the fate of NSCs under aging and depression-like contexts. Increasing the expression of SIRT3 can restore the function of aged NSCs.

Prevalence of Impaired Fasting Glucose and Type 2 Diabetes in Kazakhstan: Findings From Large Study

Binur Orazumbekova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), undiagnosed, and prior-diagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Kazakhstan. The results showed a high prevalence of IFG and a significant proportion of newly diagnosed T2DM in Kazakhstan. The identified risk factors can be used to strengthen the identification of undiagnosed patients and provide preventive or therapeutic interventions to reduce the incidence of T2DM and its complications.

Protective role of mitoquinone against impaired mitochondrial homeostasis in metabolic syndrome

Jing Yang et al.

Summary: MitoQ reduces mitochondrial oxidative stress and promotes autophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis to alleviate MetS symptoms such as obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Its regulatory effect on mitochondrial homeostasis is mediated through AMPK and its downstream signaling pathways.

Untangling the effect of insulin action on brain mitochondria and metabolism

Mareike Schell et al.

Summary: The regulation of energy homeostasis is controlled by the brain, which relies on functional insulin/IGF-1 signalling and mitochondrial function. Disruptions in this interaction can lead to obesity, glucose intolerance, and neurodegenerative diseases. Identifying factors deteriorating brain insulin action and mitochondrial function is crucial for understanding the development of diseases like type 2 diabetes and neurodegeneration.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different diets on hearing function, inner ear SIRT1 and SIRT3 expression levels, and cochlear morphology. The results showed that supplementation with MNAM can increase the expression levels of SIRT1 and SIRT3 in the cochlea, preventing age-related hearing loss.

Summary: This study investigated a novel role of mitochondrial fission in lipid homeostasis. Inhibition of mitochondrial fission altered the balance of fatty acids between lipid droplets and mitochondria. Moreover, carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT1) controlled the respiratory rate of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation.

AMPK and Pulmonary Hypertension: Crossroads Between Vasoconstriction and Vascular Remodeling

Summary: Pulmonary hypertension is a debilitating disease characterized by increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. The role of AMPK in PH is controversial as both inhibition and activation of AMPK can potentially prevent the development of PH. Clinical studies suggest that metformin, an AMPK activator, is effective in treating early-stage PH and particularly beneficial for patients with PH associated with heart failure.
