Holocene and recent fires influence on soil organic matter, microbiological and physico-chemical properties of peats in the European North-East of Russia

A. A. Dymov et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of fires on the development and chemical composition of two Rheic Hemic Histosols in the native territory of the middle taiga of the Komi Republic. It shows that peatlands experienced various pyrogenic events, leading to changes in soil and vegetation. The accumulation of charcoal particles in the peat indicates the transport of fire residues. The frequency of fires has a significant effect on carbon stocks in the Histosols.

Changes of Soil Organic Carbon after Wildfire in a Boreal Forest, Northeast CHINA

Chun-Lan Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates changes in soil organic carbon after wildfires in a boreal forest, using a post-fire soil chronosequence after 3 months, 17 years, and 25 years. The results show that the ability of soil to sequester carbon decreases after wildfire disturbances, with stable SOC accumulating more in areas where species-dominance relay succession occurred.

Carbon stocks of soils under forest in the Komi Republic of Russia

Andrey F. Osipov et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in dominant forest soils in the European North-East of Russia. Significant variations in SOC stocks were found among different soil groups, with differences between minimal and maximal values changing from 4 to 13 times. Variations in bulk density were observed among separate soil groups.

Impacts of wildfire on soil microbiome in Boreal environments

Kajar Koster et al.

Summary: The predicted temperature changes for future climate will have the most pronounced effects on boreal and arctic regions, impacting the stability of permafrost and fire dynamics in these areas. This will lead to changes in soil microbiome and its recovery and resilience as fire occurrence times shift and fire return intervals, intensity, and severity increase in boreal environments.
