Differences in growth pattern and response to climate warming between Larix olgensis and Pinus koraiensis in Northeast China are related to their distinctions in xylem hydraulics

Qiu-Rui Ning et al.

Summary: The study compared the growth and response patterns of Larix olgensis and Pinus koraiensis trees to climate warming, and found significant differences in growth rate, hydraulic conductivity, and functional traits between the two conifer species. Temperature was identified as the main controlling factor for growth in both species under the current climate regime. However, competition from broadleaf trees significantly affected the growth of Korean pine trees at low elevations, and the drying effect of warming offset the beneficial effects on growth of larch trees at low elevations.

Degree of connectivity in reconstructed precipitation dynamics and extremes for semiarid regions across South Siberia

Anastasiya Demina et al.

Summary: Tree rings from forest-steppes of temperate continental Asia serve as valuable proxies for reconstructing moisture regimes in the area, capturing environmental changes such as climate warming and drought variations. The study highlights the complexity of precipitation heterogeneity and the potential for large-scale droughts in the region. Reconstruction models based on tree ring data from two distant intermountain valleys in South Siberia show strong correlations with annual precipitation, revealing common and opposite extremes and cyclic patterns related to solar activity and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Differences in the impact of oceanic air masses and astronomic cycles between the two regions are also noted.

Higher plasticity of water uptake in spruce than larch in an alpine habitat of North-Central China

Yiping Zhang et al.

Summary: By investigating the seasonal variation of water sources between two co-occurring tree species, this study found differences in water uptake and soil depth utilization between deciduous larch and evergreen spruce. The results suggest that species-specific water use strategies have implications for forest dynamics and potential resilience to environmental stress.

Soil frost affects stem diameter growth of Norway spruce with delay

Tapani Repo et al.

Summary: This study found that the lack of snow cover not only has short-term impacts on the radial growth of trees but also longer-lasting consequences. Differences in radial growth appeared one year after treatments, became significant in 2011 and lasted for 3 years.

Species-specific growth-climate responses of Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii) and Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) in the Greater Khingan Range, northeast China

Wenqing Li et al.

Summary: Tree growth responses to climate are spatially heterogeneous, influenced by species specificity and external environments. Dahurian larch was found to be more positively correlated with spring temperature and negatively correlated with summer temperature, while Mongolian pine was more sensitive to summer moisture. Dahurian larch showed higher resistance to drought, while Mongolian pine demonstrated higher recovery. Forest type also played a role in influencing growth-climate responses, with mixed forests exacerbating the negative effects of summer temperatures on Mongolian pine. Ultimately, as warming trends continue, species specificity in growth response is likely to lead to the separation of the two species in their distribution.

How to cope with drought and not die trying: Drought acclimation across tree species with contrasting niche breadth

Alex Fajardo et al.

Summary: By studying the responses of eight angiosperm tree species with contrasting niche breadth to the severe 2015-2016 El Nino drought event along a precipitation gradient in southern Chile, it was found that all species exhibited a functional coordination with a non-water-conservative strategy post-drought, suggesting that drought may trigger similar interspecific responses.
