Assembly processes of abundant and rare microbial communities in orchard soil under a cover crop at different periods

Zhiyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms play important roles in agricultural ecosystems, but little is known about their dynamic diversity patterns and community assembly processes, especially in rare microbial biospheres in agricultural systems. In this study, the responses of diverse bacterial and fungal subcommunities to agricultural practices were explored in a semiarid orchard soil. The study found that bacterial and fungal subcommunities exhibited similar responses to cover crop or growth periods, with growth periods significantly altering the community structures. The assembly processes of abundant and rare taxa were influenced by factors such as soil nutrients and pH, providing new insights into microbial community formation.

Microbial generalists and specialists differently contribute to the community diversity in farmland soils

Qicheng Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ecological characteristics of microbial generalists and specialists through the analysis of global farmland soil samples. Specialists showed lower tolerance to environmental fluctuations and were more influenced by deterministic processes, while generalists played a more important role in maintaining community stability through stochastic processes. Generalists dampened microbial biogeographical patterns, whereas specialists had contrasting impacts.

Nitrogen Availability and Microbial Communities of Canopy Soils in a Large Cercidiphyllum japonicum Tree of a Cool-Temperate Old Growth Forest

Summary: Canopy soils on large trees are crucial for supporting canopy plants and increasing biodiversity. Despite differences in soil properties and microbial communities between canopy and ground soils, canopy soils can still provide available nitrogen for plants through functional redundancy within microbial communities.

Drivers and implications of distance decay differ for ectomycorrhizal and foliar endophytic fungi across an anciently fragmented landscape

Elizabeth A. Bowman et al.

Summary: Fungal communities associated with plants show distance decay, with ectomycorrhizal fungi primarily constrained by dispersal limitation and foliar endophytic fungi constrained by specific environmental conditions. This regional-scale perspective is important for estimating fungal diversity associated with forest trees and understanding the impacts of decreasing suitable habitat, increasing disturbance, and climate change on different fungal symbiont guilds.
