Forgotten forbs: Standard vegetation surveys underrepresent ecologically and culturally important forbs in a threatened grassland ecosystem

Bryan A. Endress et al.

Summary: Forbs are culturally and ecologically important in the Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass ecosystem, but have been poorly studied. Traditionally, vegetation surveys conducted in mid-summer underestimate forb abundance. This study found that the timing of vegetation sampling has significant effects on perennial forb abundance, richness, and floral density, particularly for species culturally significant to Indigenous people. Therefore, sampling during both spring and summer would provide more accurate data for evaluating and characterizing the vegetation dynamics of the region and improving management and conservation of native forbs.

Forb community response to prescribed fire, livestock grazing, and an invasive annual grass in the Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass Prairie

Brogan L. Watson et al.

Summary: Research indicates that prescribed fires have a significant impact on forb community composition and cover, but minimal impact on species richness and diversity. Grazing negatively affects forb cover, but has little impact on species richness and diversity. Perennial species are more prevalent in areas not subjected to fire.

The paradox of forbs in grasslands and the legacy of the mammoth steppe

Kari Anne Brathen et al.

Summary: The grassland biome supports a diverse range of life, with forbs playing a key role in the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity. Evidence suggests that forbs were abundant in the Pleistocene grasslands and may still rely on niche construction by large herbivores. Greater research and conservation efforts are needed to sustain the abundance and diversity of forbs in grasslands globally.
