Wavelet methods reveal big cat activity patterns and synchrony of activity with preys

Jinzhe Qi et al.

Summary: Appropriate temporal and spatial scales are crucial for reliable results in wildlife activity patterns and interspecific interactions studies. Camera-trap technology has increased interest in studying these patterns, but many studies are conducted at arbitrary scales. This study used wavelet analysis to determine scales for Amur leopards and their prey, showing seasonal fluctuations in activity and significant interactions at a spatial scale of 1 km(2).

The Winner Takes it All: Risk Factors and Bayesian Modelling of the Probability of Success in Escaping from Big Cat Predation

Sergio Fernandez Moya et al.

Summary: This study examines the predator/prey interaction and identifies factors such as predator species, age, status, time elapsed, prey species, and terrain relief that affect the success of prey escaping from big cats. The findings provide insights into the predatory abilities and anti-predation strategies of big cats, and can be used to improve environmental enrichment programs in captivity and design selective strategies for domestic animals.

Elusive cats in our backyards: persistence of the North Chinese leopard (Panthera pardus japonensis) in a human-dominated landscape in central China

Haitao Yang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the wild population of North Chinese leopards is increasing in the remaining forests of the Loess Plateau, with a higher density compared to other areas in China. Prey species partially influence the habitat use of leopards, while human disturbances, especially oil wells, have negative impacts. Joint efforts by the government and researchers are needed to improve human disturbances management and prey population density, as well as to invest more in North Chinese leopard research for long-term survival and protection.

Nocturnal vocal behaviour of the diurnal Undulated Tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus) is associated with temperature and moon phase

Cristian Perez-Granados et al.

Summary: The study monitored the nocturnal vocal activity of the Undulated Tinamou in the Brazilian Pantanal from June 2015 to May 2016. The results showed a unimodal pattern of nocturnal vocal output, with peak activity in September and October. Nocturnal vocal activity was positively associated with moon phase, but not with minimum air temperature, suggesting a potential relationship between vocalizations and moonlight intensity.

Temporal interactions and moon illumination effect on mammals in a tropical semievergreen forest of Manas National Park, Assam, India

Urjit Bhatt et al.

Summary: Species interactions play a crucial role in structuring mammalian communities by affecting sympatric associations and predator-prey relationships. In Manas National Park, India, there was high temporal overlap among sympatric carnivores, while different body-sized carnivores showed low overlap. The activity of Viverrids was negatively correlated with lunar cycles, and large and small prey were more active during brighter nights.

Population Density and Driving Factors of North China Leopards in Tie Qiao Shan Nature Reserve

Mengyan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examined the population abundance and density distribution of the North China leopard in a nature reserve in Shanxi Province, China, and identified the factors influencing their spatial distribution, including prey availability, habitat, and human interference. The results highlighted the importance of comprehensive and customized conservation strategies for protecting this unique leopard subspecies in China.

Temporal partitioning and spatiotemporal avoidance among large carnivores in a human-impacted African landscape

Charlotte E. Searle et al.

Summary: The diverse guilds of large carnivores in Africa face threats from anthropogenic pressures, which may disrupt their coexistence mechanisms. Research suggests that in areas with high human impacts, leopards may reduce avoidance of lions, while lions modify their activity patterns to avoid humans.

Effects of human activity on the habitat utilization of Himalayan marmot (Marmota himalayana) in Zoige wetland

Shuailing Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on Himalayan marmots revealed that human activities impact the distance and number of burrows, as well as the site selection strategy for burrows. The marmots adapt by building reproductive burrows on mounds for better vigilance and drainage efficiency, and digging more burrows in disturbed habitats to flee more effectively.

DNA metabarcoding reveals that African leopard diet varies between habitats

Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller et al.

Summary: Understanding the dietary habits of carnivores, such as leopards, is important for their adaptability in changing environments. Using DNA metabarcoding, this study found that leopards in grassland consume larger prey compared to those in rainforest. Arboreal species play a significant role in the leopards' diet, highlighting their importance in the ecosystem.
