Post-error recruitment of frontal sensory cortical projections promotes attention in mice

Kevin J. Norman et al.

Summary: New research reveals that neurons in the frontal cortex projecting to the visual cortex are selectively activated after recent errors during a mouse visual attention task. Optogenetic manipulation of this pathway can adjust performance and increase visual attention levels, providing insight into a circuit-based mechanism for promoting cognitive control.

High-precision coding in visual cortex

Carsen Stringer et al.

Summary: The study found that individual neurons in the visual cortex provide unreliable estimates of visual features, and it is unknown if single-neuron variability is correlated across large neural populations. By recording and measuring a large number of neurons from the mouse visual cortex, it was discovered that behavioral variability during a sensory discrimination task could not be explained by neural variability in V1.

Organization of feedback projections to mouse primary visual cortex

Mai M. Morimoto et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the inputs to mouse V1 by injecting retrograde tracers and mapping labeled cell bodies to corresponding brain areas in the Allen Reference Atlas. We identified over 24 brain areas that provide inputs to V1 and quantified the strength of their projections, showing both topography and bias in the organization of feedback projections to V1 from higher visual and nonvisual areas.

Gated feedforward inhibition in the frontal cortex releases goal-directed action

Jae-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, Kim et al. found that visual inputs trigger gated feedforward inhibition of ACC neurons, which disinhibits striatal motor neurons and initiates precise responses in mice performing a visual Go/No-go task. The characteristics of ACC neurons can predict response times in mice, and optogenetic activation of visual inputs in the ACC prompts task-relevant actions by suppressing ACC motor neurons and disinhibiting downstream striatal neurons.
