Emerging natural recombinant Marek's disease virus between vaccine and virulence strains and their pathogenicity

Yanping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study isolated six natural recombinant strains of Marek's disease virus (MDV) from infected chickens in China. The researchers found that these strains resulted from recombination between a vaccine strain and a virulence strain. Two of the recombinant strains showed mild virulence and caused temporary damage to the immune organs of chickens.

The Conserved Herpesviridae Protein Kinase (CHPK) of Gallid alphaherpesvirus 3 (GaHV3) Is Required for Horizontal Spread and Natural Infection in Chickens

Andrea Krieter et al.

Summary: The conserved herpesvirus protein kinase (CHPK) has been identified as essential for the horizontal transmission of Marek's disease virus (MDV). This study confirms the importance of CHPK activity in the horizontal spread of Gallid alphaherpesvirus 3 (GaHV3) and suggests that avian CHPKs play a conserved role in natural infection.

The requirement of glycoprotein C (gC) for interindividual spread is a conserved function of gC for avian herpesviruses

Widaliz Vega-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the essential role of glycoprotein C (gC) of Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 in interindividual spread in chickens, and suggests the conservation of this function in other alphaherpesviruses. By manipulating the gC gene in the MD vaccine strain 301B/1, researchers confirmed its importance for interindividual spread through experimental and natural infection studies. Replacement of 301B/1 gC with MDV gC also resulted in efficient spread, indicating the conserved role of alphaherpesvirus gC proteins and their potential in future vaccine development against Marek's disease.

The Requirement of Glycoprotein C for Interindividual Spread Is Functionally Conserved within the Alphaherpesvirus Genus (Mardivirus), but Not the Host (Gallid)

Widaliz Vega-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Studying interindividual spread of Marek's disease herpesvirus in chickens revealed that the functional role of glycoprotein C (gC) varies depending on virus genera (Mardivirus vs. Iltovirus) rather than host species (Gallid vs. Meleagrid). The study highlights the conservation of gC functionality across different virus genera.
