A 500-year tale of co-evolution, adaptation, and virulence:Helicobacter pyloriin the Americas

Zilia Y. Munoz-Ramirez et al.

Summary: Helicobacter pylori is a common component of the human stomach microbiota, with evidence of frequent admixture in American strains leading to the development of novel American H. pylori subpopulations. Virulence genes in America show the strongest fixation, with unique evolutionary paths contributing to the high risk of gastric cancer in the region.

Patterns of genetic diversity in Colombia for 38 indels used in human identification

Humberto Ossa et al.

Summary: The population of Colombia has genetic heterogeneity due to migrations from different continents and within the country. It is important to consider this population stratification in forensic analysis, especially for markers with marked intercontinental differentiation. The study found that a set of 38 indels could be useful in individual identification studies in Colombia, showing high levels of discrimination and exclusion power complementing with other markers.
