Race and the spatialisation of risk during the 2013-2016 West African Ebola epidemic

Summary: This paper examines how international health responders navigated the risks in Ebola Treatment Centers during the West African Ebola epidemic, emphasizing the need for a race-conscious analysis of spatial strategies of risk aversion. Interviews with responders in Liberia and Sierra Leone revealed that the spatial organization of ETCs perpetuated inequalities between Black and white lives, contributing to the normalization of Black suffering and death.

Contextualizing Risk Perception and Trust in the Community-Based Response to Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia

Summary: This study examined the EVD epidemic in Liberia and found that implementing a community-based response, involving Ebola survivors and local leaders, helped curb and ultimately end the epidemic. Direct community involvement increased trust between citizens, officials, and response teams, leading to greater acceptance of safety protocols, receptiveness to risk information, and changes in mobility patterns that significantly impacted the course of the epidemic.
