Hemodynamic Modeling, Medical Imaging, and Machine Learning and Their Applications to Cardiovascular Interventions

Mason Kadem et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease presents a global health crisis with significant financial consequences. Innovative approaches such as personalized hemodynamic modeling, machine learning, and modern imaging have been employed to enhance patient outcomes and decrease the economic burden. Hemodynamic modeling offers a non-invasive method to provide valuable metrics for clinicians, while medical imaging plays a crucial role in understanding and managing cardiac disease. By combining machine learning with modeling and cardiovascular imaging, it is possible to improve modeling speed, data accuracy, and early detection of cardiovascular anomalies, leading to the development of patient-specific diagnostic and predictive tools. This review provides an overview of translational hemodynamic modeling, medical imaging, and machine learning, highlighting their potential in supporting decision making during critical clinical milestones.

The Critical Role of Lumped Parameter Models in Patient-Specific Cardiovascular Simulations

Louis Garber et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular computational modelling, especially using lumped parameter modelling (LPM), is becoming increasingly important in early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and research of cardiovascular diseases. LPM's advantages of rapid computation time and simplicity make it a potential tool for developing patient specific cardiovascular digital twin frameworks in the future.

Wall Shear Stress Predicts Aortic Dilation in Patients With Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Andrea Guala et al.

Summary: This study assessed the predictive value of wall shear stress (WSS) for the growth rate (GR) of the ascending aorta (AAo) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). The results showed a positive correlation between WSS and its circumferential component with AAo GR. Therefore, the evaluation of WSS may be helpful in the follow-up of these patients.

Reducing Morbidity and Mortality in Patients With Coarctation Requires Systematic Differentiation of Impacts of Mixed Valvular Disease on Coarctation Hemodynamics

Reza Sadeghi et al.

Summary: The study showed that COA and mixed valvular diseases interacted to worsen abnormal blood flow dynamics and increase disease progression. Additionally, the presence of valvular diseases in patients led to increased workload, highlighting the importance of considering both COA severity and mixed valvular diseases in patient evaluation and treatment planning.

Impact of mixed valvular disease on coarctation hemodynamics using patient-specific lumped parameter and Lattice Boltzmann modeling

Reza Sadeghi et al.

Summary: The optimal course of intervention for patients with coexisting coarctation of the aorta (COA) and mixed valvular disease (MVD) is uncertain. This study developed a computational-mechanics framework to investigate the impact of COA and MVD on aortic fluid dynamics. The results suggest that the presence and severity of MVD should be considered in the evaluation of risks in patients with COA.

Association of Regional Wall Shear Stress and Progressive Ascending Aorta Dilation in Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Gilles Soulat et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive role of wall shear stress (WSS) in the growth of the ascending aorta (AAo). It found that higher rates of AAo dilation were associated with larger areas of elevated WSS in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), suggesting that measuring WSS can help identify BAV patients who require closer follow-up.

Summary: This study established a systematic method for identifying parameters of cancer cell deformability models through the use of spring network models and genetic algorithms. By accurately simulating the deformation of human lung cancer cells in narrow microchannel constriction and analyzing the effects of flow rates on cell motion and deformation, it was found that neglecting cell membrane viscosity and cell-wall friction can introduce significant errors.

Aortic hemodynamics assessment prior and after valve sparing reconstruction: A patient-specific 4D flow-based FSI model

Guido Nannini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that after valve-sparing root replacement, there is an increase in velocity, distensibility, stress, and strain in the descending aorta, which may lead to adverse vessel remodeling. The fluid-structure interaction method is necessary to obtain reliable results on the wall distensibility and the impact of graft implantation on hemodynamics and biomechanics along the thoracic aorta.
