Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics study of human aquaporin-2 in the static external electric fields

Hooman Hadidi et al.

Summary: In this study, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the effects of external electric fields on the gating mechanism and water permeability of human aquaporin-2 (AQP2). The results showed that different directions of the electric field can lead to varied conformations of the selectivity filter region in AQP2, affecting water molecule translocation and permeability.

The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is vulnerable to moderate electric fields

Claudia R. Arbeitman et al.

Summary: Research has shown that external electric fields can significantly destabilize the S protein of SARS-CoV-2, causing structural damage and disrupting its ability to bind to ACE2 receptors. This approach could offer a clean physical method to weaken the virus, without the need for further biochemical processing, for infection prevention and in-vitro structural manipulation purposes. The method's non-specificity suggests it could be applicable to other mutations in S, other proteins of SARS-CoV-2, and membrane proteins of other virus types.

Denaturation of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein under non-thermal microwave radiation

Pooya Afaghi et al.

Summary: The study found that irradiating the spike protein with a 700 W, 2.45 GHz electromagnetic field for 2 minutes can denature the protein to around 95%. This electromagnetic denaturation may offer potential therapeutic or sanitation applications for the virus's proteins.

Molecular dynamics evidence for nonthermal effects of electric fields on pectin methylesterase activity

Chaminda P. Samaranayake et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that electric fields have nonthermal effects on biological systems, but these effects are not well understood at the molecular level. This study investigated the impact of electric fields on pectin methylesterase, a cell wall modifying enzyme in plants, with results indicating structural changes in the protein due to the electric field. The findings suggest that electric fields can influence the functional role of proteins by altering their structure.
